So until the default disappears from the record in 2020, we will either have to wait to buy a house, try to resolve the issue, or build his credit rating in other ways.
Thanks so much for the advice, apologies for being so clueless!
You need to find another broker as this one is talking out of his behind.
I secured a mortgage with my wife (who has a clean file) with Halifax last July with a rate of 1.66% for the first 2 years with 6 defaults, of which 3 remain on my file and 2 of which won't go until next year.
There are brokers out there who will find you a decent mortgage now.2.88 kWp System, SE Facing, 30 Degree Pitch, 12 x 240W Conergy Panels, Samil Solar River Inverter, Havant, Hampshire. Installed July 2012, acquired by me on purchase of house in August 20170 -
Experian used to do a weird thing in that even when an account is satisfied, they leave the last monthly status indicator recorded as an 8 as opposed to other CRAs you put an S for satisfied or similar.
If the account has been satisfied then it should however indicate this somewhere on the entry, and if it does not EE should update it so that it does.
I would agree with others though. A mortgage broker who is incompetent at reading or understanding credit reports is to be utterly avoided.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Only just checked this now! Thanks for the advice, I'll look into changing brokers. Bizarrely, I cancelled our paid Experian subscription yesterday (can't afford to keep paying indefinitely), checked the rating again through the free check option that they have, and it's come up as 'excellent'! Very odd. The others (noddle and clearscore) are both not great.
I'll check around for a better broker - !!!!!! it generally better to use a broker or to do the legwork yourself?? We've never got a mortgage before so, as you can tell, this is all new!
Thanks for all your helpful replies, I really appreciate it as when it comes to this stuff I have no idea what's best!

Ignore any scores or ratings that CRA’s give you - they're made up and no one sees them but you.
Lenders will look at your credit history and current data - not the made up scores and ratings - a broker should know this as well.
What does the account show as on Noddle and Clearscore?
