Forced To Extract My Own Tooth Because Dentists would Not Do It.

Would it even be possible to do this? I can imagine it would be incredibly difficult to get the right angle with the pliers, and then would your brain even let you cause yourself that sort of harm?0
-
You need to discuss your problems with your mental health team. Four different dentists thought it unnecessary to remove your tooth. We cannot help you on this forum as we have tried to explain on your other threads.0

There's also the little issue that the nerve branches, so while you might swear black is white it's one tooth (say on the jaw), it could in fact be the mirror tooth under the nose.
M'husband nearly tried self-extraction & had the molegrips on the wrong tooth. Thank god for the NHS emergency dentist.0 -

She said that because the extraction had been difficult, the next door tooth had been bashed about a bit (I paraphrase) and should settle in a wee while, and that it had no decay and looked fine. I think it!!!8217;s because the neighboring tooth can be used a bit like a lever ( the word fulcrum is in my head, but that may be rubbish) during an extraction. Anyway, she was absolutely right. I hope you feel much better soon.
Yes I was told the same thing by one of the dentists I saw.
Mine was a difficult extraction.
The dentist said I had a surgical extraction. And as I said in my first post the dentist was pulling and pushing to get the tooth out.
He did not use dental pliers or dental forceps.
He used a kind of silver stick screwdriver thing. I call it the screwdriver but that's not the correct name! I think it's called an elevator or dental elevator.
And he dug the stick thing in my gum in between my tooth and the tooth next to it. And poked it or knocked it out.
That's what it felt like. I could fell him hitting the tooth to get it out.
Maybe he should not have done that. Maybe he should have used the dental forceps where it just grabs the tooth but he didn't.
When he got the tooth out he put 2 stitches in my gum.
I did not want this because I know stitches hurt.
But he said he had to.
When the injection wore off the tooth next to the extracted one hurt. So did my gum.
So I took the stitches out myself because I thought that was causing the tooth to hurt. And when I got the stitches out which I did by using my nail scissors to cut the stitches. Then pull them out with tweezers, using a dental mirror and the wall mirror. So I could see what I was doing.
I did get all of the stitches out. But the pain in the tooth was still there after I removed the stitches. Though the pain in my gum was not so bad. I mean my gum hurt but the tooth hurt more.
And the next day I went to the 24 hour emergency private dentist in London.
And he did X ray my gum and tooth. And said I did get all of the stitches out. But he said he did not know why the tooth was loose but it needed to come out.
I asked him if there was any other treatment he could do such as a filing or a root canal(even though I did not want one.)
He said no because the tooth was loose so the only option was to take it out.
But he said he did not want to take it out because it was next to the extraction site and I still had an open wound from the extraction a few hours ago. The day before. So he wouldn't take it out.
He told me to come back in a week when he may be able to do it.
So I got very upset and kicked up or kicked off as they say and I refused to pay the £100 for the consultation. Because the dentist would take my tooth out.
Then the receptionists went to the other dentists in the clinic. And after making me sit for ages in the waiting room, came back and said they are not going to take the tooth out. The other dentists said the X Rays say there is nothing wrong with the tooth, it's your gums, from yesterdays extraction, you have got dry socket.
I then said to the receptionist the tooth might be cracked and cracks in the tooth don't show up on X Rays.
I know because I have had this problem with some of my other teeth before and my dentist and other dentists have told me.
But the receptionist would not listen to me.
So it was then I got angry because they were telling me a different story.
First the dentist I saw said it needed to come out but he would not do it because I had an open wound.
Then the receptionist tells me they are not going to take it out.
Since when is the receptionist qualified to give a diagnosis?
And why did she not get the dentist to speak to me about this?
Then the receptionist goes back into the surgery to talk to the other dentists in the practice. Different dentists to the one I saw then she tells me the other dentists say there is nothing wrong with my tooth and they won't do the extraction at all.
No wonder I was angry with them. That's why I refused to pay.
Then the dentist who saw me comes back out and talks to me.
He tells me when I ask him again the way the tooth is at the moment it has to come out. But he cannot do it because of my extraction wound.
Then he says if it is still hurting next week we will see, we will discuss what to do about it.
So even if I had waited a week and gone back there is no guarantee that he would have taken the tooth out. He might no have done.
So after that surgery a few days later on Monday I did have an emergency appointment with my dentist who did the extraction that caused the problem with my second tooth in the first place.
I told him what the emergency private dentist in London had said.
That my tooth needs to come out but cannot be taken out because I have had an extraction a day ago and still have an open wound from it.
My dentist said the tooth can be extracted if it needs to be but he does not think it needs to come out.
He just thinks it's loose because of the extraction of the other tooth.
He explained to me that it sometimes happens that when a tooth is extracted the tooth next to it can come loose but it's normal. And as the gum heals the teeth tightens up again and goes back to normal.
He said he could adjust the bite as it might help so I let him do it.
He adjusted the bite but that did not help either.
So next day Tuesday I went to see another dentist in London.
This woman was nice but she said it does not need to come out.
Because it's normal for the tooth next to it to be loose after an extraction.
But I have had other teeth extracted before and I have never had this problem.
She said to me if she extracted the tooth she would use the elevator stick the same as my dentist did. And the tooth next to that could come loose. And what am I going to do then? Have that one out? We could go on forever.
Yes there is that risk but at the same time my tooth was hurting.
But as I said I have had other teeth out before and I have never had the tooth next to it come loose or had any problems.
But this time I have. So something went wrong with this extraction.
This dentist said it could take 4 weeks for the pain in my tooth to go away and my gum to heal.
She said if it still hurts then come back to her.
I then payed the Dentist but I was still not happy.
So I went to another private dental clinic just a few miles from that one. It was another place that did emergency treatment.
The dentist I saw there a man said that it because I had an extraction that the teeth is loose as the jaw bone is adjusting.
And it can take 1 or 2 months before the tooth or mouth recovers.
He said he does not take teeth out as a dentist his job is to try to save the tooth.
His words were this "it's like if some comes to me and says take my tooth out because it's hurting, we don't because as a dentist we try to save a tooth. We don't take a teeth out because someone says they want it out. Same as you don't cut a finger off because someone says my finger is hurting.
My job as a dentists is to save the tooth not take it out.
If it is still hurting after 1 or 2 months and you are in a lot of pain. I would do a root canal and a crown not take it out."
So I said I am not having a root canal or a crown because my teeth and gums are very sensitive and I might have a bad reaction to it. And I don't want to risk it.
I don't mind a normal white filing as I have those in other teeth and they are all right.
But I won't have a root canal or a crown and if I am still in pain I want the tooth taken out.
The dentist said he won't do that.
I then asked him how much would a RC and a crown cast me.
He said £1400, £700 for the root canal and £700 for the crown.
I told him I cannot afford that I don't have that kind of money.
( I do because I have got my inheritance, but I don't want a root canal or a crown.)
He also said when they do a root canal they also have to crown the tooth and explained a RC is not like a normal filling where they just fill the tooth.
So if I had a RC I would have to have a crown.
I told him no there is no way I will have a RC or a crown.
And I cannot afford it anyway.
He then said I can't help you I won't take the tooth out if you want that go somewhere else.
So I went home still in pain and it was then I realized that I was not going to get rid of my pain. It was getting worse.
I could either go to more dentists, and every timer In went to one it was costing me more money. And they were doing nothing about it. And be in pain for weeks or even months if no dentist would take that tooth out as I knew it had to come out.
Or I could take it out myself.
So I took my tooth out myself. It hurt like hell and I did not know what was going to happen. If it would come out or not. Or if something should go wrong.
In which case I lived next door the hospital so I could take myself there if it did.
I watched the You Tube videos and read some websites. People have taken their own teeth out with pliers and some with dental equipment.
So with the curtains of my window closed so nobody could see in.
I took the pliers and loosened the tooth by which hurt. I also put some ice cold water from the fridge in my mouth and put it over the tooth and gums in between pulls to try to kill the pain.
It helped but not very much.
I had to get the pliers right up to the gum so it would grip the whole tooth to get it out. Then I pulled at the tooth. I pulled with my right hand- nothing .
Then I put the pliers in my left hand, since the tooth was on top right hand side of my mouth and gripped the tooth hard, leaning over the kitchen sink.
And put my right hand over my cheek to help me bear the pain.
I gripped the tooth tight with the pliers and pulled again and I felt a tugging then I saw the tooth in the pliers.
The tooth was out.
I could not believe I had done it but there it was.
I bled which is normal after an extraction.
I have had tooth extracted before at the dentist so I knew this was normal. So I knew what to do to stop the bleeding.
I then bit down on the J cloth to stop the bleeding. Then bit down on a paper kitchen towel.
And the bleeding stopped after about 15 minutes, I am not quite sure.
The whole of the tooth came out roots and the tooth was intact when it came out. So I had not left any tooth in my gum.
I looked in my dental mirror and say I had got all of the tooth out and had a hole in my gum which is also normal after an extraction.
The gum felt sore when I bit down on the cloth but that stopped.
And all of the pain I had went away.
Yes it hurts when you pull the tooth yourself but after the tooth is out the pain goes away.
My gum is healing up and I am using a homeopathic tincture of Hypericum and Calendula which I dilute in water and use as a mouthwash and hold in the mouth against the extraction sites.
And taking homeopathic medicines which is also helping my gum to heal. And I am eating on the other side but the pain is gone.
As I said I did not want to take my own tooth out.
I would have had it done at the dentist and I wanted the dentist to do it. I was even wiling to pay for and stay overnight in hospital to have it done if they had said I had to.
But no dentist I saw would do it.
So I had no choice but to take maters into my own hands and extract the tooth myself.
If I had not done so I would still be in pain now.
But thank God that tooth is gone and In am all right.
But it still should not have come to that. The dentists should have done it but they didn't.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I really think you need to get some help for your state of mind, you could have really hurt yourself if this is true. (You may still, it could still get infected and infections that start in the teeth and gums can actually get very serious).
Do you have a CPN or a support worker?0 -

The problem is a lot of dentists won't take a tooth out even if you are in terrible pain. They like to save the tooth and their policy it seems is to do a crown or a root canal, which I don't want.
And I know people who have had crowns and they have had lots of problems. My gums are not in a very good condition and also I have very sensitive teeth and gums.
And my teeth are very close together so if they put a crown in I might react to it.
So I don't want to take that risk by having one.
My dentist and other dentists told me if I choose to have a root canal done they would also have to put a crown on that tooth or any other teeth I have root canals. Because otherwise it won't hold.
Also my dentist said that sometime when you have a root canal it does not always work or it works for a time.
But eventually the tooth has to be extracted anyway because the root canal does not always last.
There are risks with having a root canal I have read this online. And I don't want to take that risk with my teeth and health.
I am not being unreasonable at all.
My dental history in brief.
I had all of my 4 wisdom tooth taken out at the dentist in 1992 when I was 29 years old. I have never regretted it and they should have been taken out sooner.
My wisdom teeth game me a lot of discomfort and pain and were pushing against the other teeth. So the dentist took them out.
So I don't have any wisdom teeth.
Then that same year in 1992 I had my bottom molar on my left hand side of my face taken out. The second molar from the back left taken out because that tooth had been filled so many times. There was more filing than tooth and the filling was broken.
The dentist I was seeing at the time did not want to take it out. She wanted to do a filling and a crown. But I did not want a crown. Because I was afraid it would cause a reaction and I would have problems. As I explained in my above post.
So I managed to find another dentist and they took that tooth out under general anesthetic at the dental clinic.
They still did GA(general anesthetic.) in 1992 at the dental surgery but stopped doing that after 2000.
Now they can only do sedation or local anesthetic at the dentist or clinic. If you want to have a GA you have to go to hospital for that.
Where you normally stay the night. Which your dentist can refer you to if need be.
I was forced to take my tooth out because I could not find any dentist to do it. A lot of dentists fobbed me off. But this is not the first time I have had this problem.
11 years ago in 2007 I had terrible toothache in very back top molar tooth right at the back. I was with the community dentist at the time and I first started getting discomfort in that tooth the year before in 2006.
I told them I though it might need a filing but they would not fill it saying there was nothing wrong with it. It was just sensitive and put desensitizing varnish on it instead.
Which did nothing to help and I had discomfort every time I ate on that side for over a year.
Then eventually the year later in 2007 it turned into terrible pain real toothache. Giving me terrible pain in my top and bottom teeth, the right side of my face and right eye.
The pain was so bad I was holding my rigth side of my face and right eye with my hand and crying from the pain.
I went to a high street NHS dentist who told me I needed a filling and a filling on my bottom right molar. I had filled but that dentist would not do it. Because I was nervous and jerking around in the chair. And because I told her I had mental Health problems.
She said she could not do the treatment under local anesthetic.
I would have to have it done under sedation which they don't do at their surgery.
So she gave me the address of the local dental sedation clinic that does sedation which was also NHS.
But when I phoned that clinic up they said if I had sedation I have to have someone to come with me to the clinic and bring me home and stay with me for the night in my home.
And because I had no friends or family that would stay with me I could not have sedation. So they told me I would have to be have it done in hospital under sedation or general anesthetic. Which means stay the night in hospital.
But the problem was there was a years waiting list to have it done on the NHS. And I could not wait that long.
They said if I had it done private they could refer me and it would be done in a week. But private with the stay in a private hospital would cost £1600 and I never had the money. I could not afford that at that time. I never had my inheritance in 2007.
My social worker at that time tried to talk to the dentist on my behalf she phoned them.
But they told her they could not treat me in the surgery because they thought I was too nervous a patient.
And said I would have to have sedation but I would need to have someone to stay with me at home or they would not do it.
But unfortunately my social worker could not stay with me for 24 hours at home. And she could not get anyone from social services to do it. And I had no friends or family that would do it so I was stuck. So sedation was out and so was a stay overnight or treatment in hospital.
Because of the years wait on the NHS and I could not afford private hospital.
So I went back to the community NHS dentist as I had had filings done while awake under local anesthetic there before. So I thought they might do it.
They made me wait another week before the dentist would see me. Then when I got to the dentist she took X rays and said there was nothing wrong with my bottom teeth.
I did not think there was as it was that top tooth that was making the bottom one hurt.
But she also said there was nothing wrong with my top tooth because the X Rays show nothing. even though I was in real agony. She fobbed me off and said it was a sensitive tooth and did not need to be filled or taken out.
So she would not do anything because nothing showed up on the X Rays but I was in real pain. So something was wrong.
But she did not do anything about it.
And all she did was put more varnish on which did nothing for me.
So I left the community dentist still in pain. And went to the sedation clinic that the other NHS Dentist who would not treat me recommended.
They gave me an emergency appointment NHS and kept me waiting hours in the waiting room. Then when I did get to see the dentist.
It was a horrible man who was very rude to me. He said I believe you are in pain but I am not going to put a filing in because I am afraid you will sue me. And he also said the X rays don't show any cavities or anything in that tooth.
So I asked him why was I in such pain.
And he told me it could be a hairline fracture which is a small crack in the tooth that does not show up on X Rays. And the only treatment for that is either a root canal or an extraction.
But I don't want to do it. Go and find another dentist to do it.
And he sent me out of the surgery in pain even though he knew there was a problem with that tooth but he did not want to treat me.
I then went to another NHS dentist across the road from there.
I asked to speak to another dentist who came out to see me.
The receptionist called him out.
He gave me an appointment for the next day.
And when he saw me he took one look at the tooth and said it has to come out. It cannot be saved. And he took it out there and then in the surgery under a local anesthetic.
And I saw that tooth was chipped and also the roots were black.
That dentist said what was causing the pain was the roots were coming away from the gum. And that does not always show up in X rays either nor do cracks in the tooth.
He also said to me he did not understand why the other dentist I saw did not take it out.
But he said the rest of my teeth were fine I did not need any filings in the bottom teeth.
It was that top tooth that was causing me pain in both the tooth and all of my mouth which he took out for me.
So it was lucky I found that dentist because I was in pain the whole time. The same thing happened as now no dentists would do it and those were NHS dentists. So if I had not found that dentist who took that tooth out I don't know what I would have done.
But that NHS dentist in 2007 got that tooth out.
Then in 2013 I had the same problem again, more toothache, with my bottom back molar on the bottom left hand side of my face. This time I had my private dentist near where I live that I am registered with now.
He said that tooth could be treated with a root canal and a crown or he could take it out. He did say if I had a root canal that tooth might still have to be extracted eventually.
I never had my inheritace in 2013 so I did not have the money for a root canal anyway. And so I had that tooth out which he took out in the surgery.
Which brings us to the present day 2018.
I started to have problems with my second back molar tooth as you know. It was causing me pain. So my dentist took it out a week and a half ago which was what I wanted.
But then as you know when the injection wore off the tooth next to the tooth I had extracted hurt and was loose.
And the rest of the story you know.
I ended up having to take that tooth out myself because no dentist would do it.
So now my wisdom teeth are all gone I no longer have them.
My 3 top molar teeth that's my 2 molar and 1 premolar teeth on the top right hand side of my mouth are also gone.
The first molar at the very back removed in 2007 and the other 2 back molars removed a week ago.
So I have no top biting teeth on the top right hand side of my mouth anymore.
And the 2 bottom molar teeth on the bottom left hand side of my mouth are also gone they have been extracted.
So I have no biting teeth on my bottom left hand side of my mouth either.
But I still have all of my top teeth and molars on my top left hand side of my mouth.
And I still have all of my bottom teeth and molars on my bottom right hand side of my mouth.
But I think the top right hand side of my mouth are the weakest part of my gums. As I have lost all of my back teeth on that side.
And my gums are weak in general. Which I think has been the cause of my tooth problems.
If your gums are week or diseased you do end up losing your teeth. Or having problems with them. It is a fact.
So that's my whole dental history in a nutshell.

I think I read on another thread that you're on the ASD spectrum?
You could try to be referred to the community dental service. They'll have the experience to talk you through things and make sure you understand what they're saying and what's happening.
Even with anaesthetic you can feel the tugging and pushing during an extraction, that's perfectly normal. And it seems that you didn't understand the importance of avoiding dry socket and how to do that. Cutting the stitches out so quickly was an absolutely wrong move.
I also agree with Red-Squirrel, you seem to be struggling at the moment and it sounds like you really need a support worker of some kind.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0
