Forced To Extract My Own Tooth Because Dentists would Not Do It.

Here is the story in short. I had problems with my top molar tooth on the top right hand side of my mouth. That turned in to a constant toothache and constant pain that would not stop.

So I went to my private dentist last week Thursday and he took it out.
He gave me a choice of a root canal and a crown or an extraction.
I chose to have it out because I don't want a RC or a crown.
So he took it out under anesthetic.

But a few hours later when the injection wore off. The tooth next to the extracted tooth, which was a premolar hurt and was also loose.

So I asked the pharmacist a my local chemist. And he said that maybe the dentist had dislodged or damaged that tooth when he was extracting my extracted one. As the tooth that was hurting was next to the extracted tooth.

Yet I am sure there was nothing wrong with that tooth before my other tooth was extracted. As I said the tooth was next to the molar I had extracted and it was that molar that hurt and made me in pain.

But none of my other teeth hurt nor did the one next to it. Just that one which the dentist took out.

But after the dentist extracted it the tooth next to it was now loose and hurting, a lot.

So I went back to my dentist who said it was because it was a difficult extraction. Which it was as I could feel hum pulling and pushing to get that tooth out despite the injection in the gum.

But he wanted to wait a week to see if that tooth healed. But it did not and the pain in that tooth got worse and it was still loose.

So I went to 3 other dentists all private and one a private emergency dentist in London.

But none of them would do anything.
They would not take it out even though the emergency dentist I saw the day after my extraction, also private, said it had to come out.
But he would not do it because I had already had an extraction the previous day. And he said he did not want to risk my gum getting infected because the tooth was next to the extraction site and I still had an open wound.

And when I went to 2 other dentists a few days ago they also refused to do it. Even though I told them I was in pain and they could see the tooth was loose. But they refused to do anything about it.

The third dentist I saw told me to wait 1 or 2 months then if it still hurts he would do a root canal and a crown but he would not take it out.

I do not want a crown or a root canal because I am have very sensitive teeth and gums. And I am afraid I might have a bad or allergic reaction to it.

In any case a RC and a crown would cost £1600 because if you have a root canal they have to also do a crown
.

But it's not the money because I have got my inheritance. But even if the NHS did give it to me for free I would not have it. Because I don't want a root canal or a crown. I am totally opposed to this.

I don't mind a normal white filing as I have some and I have not had any problems with them. But not a crown or a RC there is no way I will have that. But that tooth could not be filled and it hurt so much I wanted them to take it out but they wouldn't.

No dentist I went to would do it
.

So on Wednesday I took the tooth out myself. I extracted the tooth myself with a pair of pliers and it worked. I got all of the tooth out.
I learned how to do this by watching some You Tube videos and let me tell you. It hurt like hell when I did it.

I had no anesthetic and or pain relief except iced cold water from the fridge. Which I put in my mouth over the tooth and gum in between pulls with the pliers.
I then grabbed the tooth with the pliers and pulled and it worked.
The tooth came out all in one roots and all.
When I was pulling the tooth it was the worse pain I ever felt but once the tooth came out the pain went away.

There was not too much blood and as I had had extractions done before I know what to do. I bit down on a cloth and kitchen towel until the bleeding stopped.

It's now been 2 days since I extracted my tooth and I am feeling fine. It hurt a lot when I did it. But the extraction went very well and I am now recovering and the pain is gone.

But I should not have had to do that.
I should not have had to resort to taking the my tooth out myself.
And I did not want to do it.

I went to many dentists and they were all private. I explained cleanly to them what was the problem.
And they saw for themselves that the tooth was loose and that was what was causing the pain.
But they did not do anything about it.

So I was faced with the choice of living for weeks or maybe even months in pain or getting the tooth out myself.
And I could not live like that. I was in terrible pain so I had no choice but to extract my tooth myself which I did and it worked.

But what also makes me angry is the problem I had with that tooth was probably a result of something the dentist did when he extracted my other tooth.

I have had other teeth extracted before all molars and I have never had this problem before.
When the dentists extracted my last 2 side teeth one bottom the other top. There was no problem it did not make my other teeth next to it loose or hurt.

But this time when the dentist extracted my molar tooth the tooth next to it was loose and hurt.
Yet he extracted it I did not have any problems.

So I went in there to the dentist to have a tooth out that was hurting and came out of there with the other tooth next to it hurting. That was not hurting before because I think he did something to that tooth.

So I ended up having to extract that tooth myself because the dentists botched the extraction by damaging that tooth next to the extracted one it seems.

And no dentist would take it out so I had to do it myself.

Thankfully that tooth is now out and I am all right. I had a check up. But I was taking a risk by doing it myself and only did it because no dentist would do it.

And that should not have happened. The dentists I saw should have taken that tooth out but they did not.
That's not right when I was in such pain.
So did it happen to you?
I welcome your comments.

annbarbs, are you now receiving support for your mental health issues? If I remember correctly you previously kept seeing a private GP service that eventually refused to see you because there was nothing wrong?

I hope you don't think me intrusive but your background issues are relevant to your post. There's no point in going round in circles as has been the case in previous threads.

If you're not seeing your GP or other mental health support, please make an appointment and discuss your latest issue with them.

Yes I have got an NHS GP and yes she is supporting me for my MH issues.

But that is not the point.
First of all I cannot get free NHS dental treatment because I am only on Contribution Based ESA not Income related ESA. Because my savings are now over 16k. And to get free NHS treatment you have to be getting income related ESA and also have savings below 16k.

But this is not the first time I have had this problem with dentists.

A few years ago I had a tooth that was hurting and then I did see both the community dentists and many NHS dentists.

But they did nothing about it.

Until eventually I found one NHS dentist who said it need ed to come out and he took it out.

But if I had not found him I don't know what I would have done.

The problem is a lot of dentists don't want to take teeth out even if you are in pain.

They want to do these crowns and rot canal and I don't want that.
    It's not about the money.

As I said I would not even if they gave it to me for free.

I would rather have the tooth taken out.

Also if you have a root canal it does not always work and the pain comes back one dentist said.

So I think if the tooth is causing you that much pain and cannot be filled it's better to take it out.

    And I did.

There is nothing to discuss regarding my tooth.

I had a toothache which no dentist would fix.

So I took it out myself.

And now the tooth is gone and the pain is gone.

    Problem solved.

Yes I took a risk but I am not sorry I did it.

I wanted the dentists or a dentist to do it.

But no one I saw would.

    So I did it myself.

    There was no other choice.

If that tooth had not come out I would have still been in pain.

But I am not in pain anymore now that tooth is gone.

I would suggest that if you have an issue with your dentist you use their complaints procedure.

Other than that, I don't think it will be helpful to offer suggestions to your post - from previous threads, I'm not sure that anything anyone says will make any difference to how you see things and it will end up in a loop going over the same ground.
I'm glad to hear that you now have a supportive GP.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Well I think that when the dentist extracted my tooth he made the other one loose.

Before I went to the dentist the pain was in my back molar. And I had had pains in that tooth on and off for months.

Then 4 weeks ago it started hurting big time no stop.
So I went to the dentist and as I said he gave me the choice of a root canal or have it taken out.

He could not do a normal white filling or silver filling because he said it could not be filled.

I have had teeth like that before that have had to come out.

My gums are in poor condition.

One tooth a few years ago was because the roots were coming away from the gums so was causing the pain.
    Also it was cracked.

Another tooth was cracked not cracked as in a cracked cup but what the dentists said was a hairline fracture.

Which is a small crack in the tooth.
That also can cause pain and they said the only treatments for that is either a root canal or an extraction.

I don't want root canals or crowns so I had those extracted.

They were done at the dentist.

This time I had the same problem but when the dentist tok the tooth out.
Afterwards when the injection wore off that tooth next to it started hurting and was loose.

It never happened before when I had my last 2 tooth extractions.

And the tooth that started hurting after my tooth was extracted did not hurt before I had that tooth extracted.

Yes that tooth that hurt was next to the one the dentist extracted.

But it never hurt before he did the extraction it was only the tooth he took out that did.

But after he extracted it that tooth next to the extracted one hurt and did not get better.

So I figure that either there was a problem with that tooth also before the extracted tooth was extracted but I and the dentist did not know.

Or it was not spotted by the dentist because I was in so much pain from the extracted tooth the dentist took out.

Or the dentist may as the pharmacist at the chemist said dislodged or damaged the tooth when he was extracting the tooth he extracted.

Either way we will never know for sure.

After I took that tooth out myself, there was not cracks at the roots.
but the bottom of the tooth was slightly chipped and the tooth was also loose anyway.

If a tooth is loose the roots are coming away from the gum and tooth and that's what was causing the pain.

I know because I have had this problem before.

And if you don't believe me look it up online.

It says cracked or cracks in teeth won't show up on X rays.
Even the private and NHS dentists told me that.
If a tooth is loose it also hurts and my gums are not very good.

That's why I have lost some teeth because of this.

And I am 55 years old so my age could have something to do with it.

When you get older your teeth also age and you can loose them.

Oh my gosh, this post has put the fears in me! I am so sorry you went through this. I had a lower molar extracted after a failed root canal last year. Afterwards, the tooth next to it hurt and felt odd, like it was slightly loose, so when I went back for the extraction review I mentioned it to the dentist. She said that because the extraction had been difficult, the next door tooth had been bashed about a bit (I paraphrase) and should settle in a wee while, and that it had no decay and looked fine. I think it!!!8217;s because the neighbouring tooth can be used a bit like a lever ( the word fulcrum is in my head, but that may be rubbish) during an extraction. Anyway, she was absolutely right. I hope you feel much better soon.

You do know, I hope, that a loosened tooth can heal if you give it time
  • I suggest gargling with salty water and hope you don't get any infections.

When a tooth is extracted doesn't the one next to it get "bruising" that goes away after a few days?

Ah well, at least by extracting it yourself, when if you get any infection then you won't need to sue a dentist and you can treat the infection yourself too.

Thank you for sharing your story.
