Hope you're having a better time of it now. The weather hasn't been too bad today so hopefully if you did go to Kendal then you'll have kept dry and found stuff to do. It's a nice little town.
Carlisle Fringe is still on though a lot of the music and free events are on the weekends rather than in the week. And if you venture up there's also the Castle, the Cathedral and Tullie House Museum as well as a few shops (but hurry they seem to be closing at an alarming rate!).

  • Morning all
We had a lovely day yesterday, more or less. I definitely hadn't been to Kendal before - none of it was familiar to me. DD dragged me round the shops a bit and into the chocolate caf! as well, as she had planned. DS has chosen today - we're spending the day at and around Windermere. The kids are going to do some treetop thing, which I wouldn't do even if I were completely fit and well. I think I'll take a book with me - not sure how much exploring I'll be able to do while I'm there - I suspect that I'll need to stay close to them even if I'm not up there. Then I'll make them walk around, and maybe we'll go on a boat. Have to confess that I really preferred the idea of Ullswater this time round, but fingers crossed it won't be as manically busy as it was the last time I went to Windermere (that was a Sunday). Ambleside is always nice as well, and I expect I can bribe the kids with ice cream to do a bit of exploring. I'll play it by ear though as far as the rest of the day goes.
I'll check in later - ds is nagging to go in the hot tub so I'd better go and sort him out. :D
  • Have a wonderful day...

Glad to hear you're having a good time. Exploring = steps! And it's fun, so you don't even really register that you're exercising.

  • Wow I am tired - and yes Foxgloves I have done a load of steps. Over 12000 today which is pretty decent considering how much driving there was in between all of it.
We started at Windermere where the kids did their climbing, net, zipline thing. They seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. Have to be honest though, it was really busy (which stresses me out) and some people are just SO rude it's unbelievable. We were there for 4 hours then I decided to get the kids to go to Ambleside which was even more busy, with even more rude people than there had been in Windermere. I can't understand some people - manners cost absolutely nothing, and if my kids and I can be respectful of others then so can everyone else.
Anyway, we lasted less than half an hour in Ambleside when I decided I'd had enough and we went to Grasmere. That was absolutely beautiful, much more quiet and the people there were no bother whatsoever. We went to the gingerbread shop and treated ourselves to some - ds didn't like it... then had a little wander round the shops and some real Lakes ice cream before heading back to the cottage.
Had dinner, watched tv then I went for a long and very relaxing dip in the hot tub. I've come out absolutely exhausted and really ready for bed. I'm just having a drink (non alcoholic to rehydrate) and then I think I'll head off. Don't think we're going out tomorrow - which is good for me :D more hot tub time.

    Oooh, The Lake District!

If you are feeling energetic - Aria Falls (NT) at Ullswater is brill (a bit of a climb, but not toooo bad). The little train 'Ravenglass and Eskdale' is good but a paid trip - but if you keep your receipt I think you get 50% off the lake boat trip where you can hop on and off around Ullswater.
And there is the Osprey project up by Bassenthwaite, Dodd Wood. You can walk through the woods (a bit hilly in places) and then watch for Osprey and other birds through the telescopes set up. I spent hours there waiting for a red squirrel to arrive (quite clearly squirrel Nutkin in my mind!!) but it refused to play along with my request!!

Have a great time - I love it up there (along way from Kent though!)

I love a good plan - it may not work.... but I love a good plan!
  • Morning all :coffee:
So, yesterday's plans for a day of slobbing started well. The plan had been to get my friend round and we'd have a wonderful afternoon relaxing and going into the hot tub and having food etc. Well, she arrived at 3pm with her dog in tow, and the kids in an utterly hyper mood fighting in the way that brothers and sisters do. The dog came into the cottage and peed on the sofa, then the floor. She was mortified, I wanted to cry - I don't even like dogs at the best of times. The kids went into the hot tub and got even more manic - mine included... It was a tough day - lovely to see my friend as it always is, but I think 'challenging' is a good description of yesterday afternoon and evening. I ended up shouting at her kids because they were just being awful to her and each other, and that made me feel guilty, but they stopped.
There's already been conflict this morning. DD decided that she was too bored staying in all day yesterday so we have to do something today. DS doesn't want to do loads of walking again and wants to stay at the cottage. We've decided to do Ullswater today and are just about to head off. I think we've reached a compromise in that I've used my Mr T vouchers for tickets for the boat so it won't be loads of walking but will be a few hours away from the cottage.
Lets see how this goes - wish me luck :rotfl:
