Come on, think about it. You're assuming behaviour that I don't exhibit, and assuming you can approach within range....

I use XP on a laptop and in VMs.
I have script-blocking enabled by default on all domains, and subscribe to a number of anti-malware domain blacklists. I don't browse random sites, and I run the browsers in a sandbox, anyway.
There are no shares (even administrative ones), the machines aren't wifi-enabled, and 99% of the time they're switched off.
I think you'd have a hard time hacking my XP machines.0 -
back every thing up and move to Ubuntu - its freeDo you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring0

I think you have two option for your use cases.
give yours a new lease of life
SSD
check memory is maxed out.
good clean inside the case.
I have an old(2008, £200) dell outlet 530, E4500 2.2GHz with 3GB running Vista, took the easy route just cloned the OS disc(I had two) onto a 840evo 250gb SSD and swapped out.
(the disc was on the way out so needed changing anyway)
Next full change the SSD comes out and into the new machine
Looks like the current 250gb are about the same price £70-£80
A 128gb would do the job around £30-£50
Bit of work <£100 and most of that portable.
New bottom end base unit.
If dell outlet does not have something in a week or two I used to use wizmark to get the current Dell bundle offer evalue codes
then use that as a benchmark for other systems.
A basic dell system looks to be around £330 these days with a monitor(19.5")
(can't work out the difference between these 2)

There will be cheaper options with end of line/lower spec/bare models etc.
Out of the loop on what's really out there while my current beast keeps running but this would be my starting point.
sometimes it is not worth scraping another £50 off when you have to do work on the box like install OS or do immediate upgrades, off the shelf ready to go has value for the I just want something that works user.0 -

I think unless something actually goes kaput, carry on using it till you need something better. My pc only struggles with large adverts. Mainly on the Mail online which is no biggie as its all rubbish anyway.
My pc is just used as an internet machine. All my pictures and stuff is in the cloud. You could probably get a netbook with more spec than my pc.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Would do a similar upgrade with yours; £25 for SSD which would reduce your machine's start up and shutdown times to seconds, as well as improving performance in general.
Perhaps £6 for 2 x 1 GB of RAM to take overall RAM to 4 GB. Free clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium/Professional etc to the SSD.
Much snappier machine for a small outlay. If you wanted to go further and watch Full HD material smoothly via your PC, you can fit a £20 graphics card.
All very easy to do yourself.
You'd be surprised at the difference.0 -

Thanks for that, i thought being that it was a Dell and everything was on board it couldnt be upgraded.

PCs from those days were designed to be user-upgradable.
Can guide you through each step if you'd like to do it. It's easy when you know how.
Loads of people on here now do their own simple maintenance from initially thinking that it was beyond them.0
