Howdy!

I have always been a Vodafone customer since 1999. I have always had iPhones since iPhone 4. I now have the SE
I received a phone call today, but believe it or not the reception from the call centre to my living room was poor. The person who called me wasn't very impressed when I told her she sounded like she was breathing like a horse :o
She terminated the call moodily. I received another call but was unable to answer at the time .

Anyway , the situation is this : Due to recent upheaval , I can buy a new iPhone outright . Not sure which one to get.

Is it best to buy phone outright ? Sim only ? Should I change from Vodafone to someone else? Should I keep the phone I already have?
I do like it .

I have Vodafone broadband and I'm fairly happy with that.
I was on a dmp from Feb 2012 , paying settlements last year .Im debt free for now .

So many questions :)

Please advise

Thanks

  • Hi

I received an email from Vodafone last week saying that the prices on my accounts will be increasing (In line with inflation act...). I'm sure I heard that you can cancel your contract within a certain timeframe following any mid contract price increases?

    Can anyone help ??

    Thanks matt

Same old question. You can't unless it is above the RPI in the relevant month.

    Hi there,

If you’re happy with your SE then personally I would go for a SIMO plan and perhaps put the money aside towards a phone in the future if/when you fancy a change or it breaks etc.

Depending on your current Vodafone tariff you might be able to take advantage of their WiFi Calling on your SE too... and at some point in the near future they are meant to be enabling SMS over WiFi Calling too (same as Three/EE).
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.
  • There is no need to replace an iPhone SE, they are still a current model with regular updates from Apple.

I would get Vodafone to unlock it and go SIM only. Most on here advocate SIM only as then you (a) often have a shorter contract allowing a switch if a better deal comes along and (b) you have a wider choice of deals, both in cost but perhaps more importantly in terms and conditions.

Three SIM only prices are a good guide in terms of value, Giffgaff are another.

As an idea of cost -- I pay £9 a month for 4GB data and unlimited UK minutes/texts with Three.

You just need to look at the contract deals and work out whether they're more expensive in the long-run than buying the phone and SIM separately.

If you're happy with your phone, why upgrade? Wait a year, you'll have saved money, and will buy an even more modern phone with cash to spare.

Oh -- and don't forget to check cashback sites before you buy (whether phone or SIM).

e.g. Quidco will give you £40 cashback for the same deal as I have. It looks like that deal is £10 a month now over 12-months, so that's an average of £6.67 a month.

Provided Quidco actually pay. I resigned because they didn't on more than one such contract.

Wow! Thanks for the input . :)
I have more news . Vodafone called daily since. I just spoke to them.
The call was the usual " as you are a loyal customer " rubbish.
They asked if my laptops / iPads are okay . I have iPads but no laptop.
Anyway , the lady asked if there was anything else she could do for me. I asked her if I'm still in contract . She checked and told me I am free of my contract . ( Nice of them not to tell me )

So, I asked questions about what they could do for me...

    1) she mentioned iPhone 6 /6s. I told her that they may be discontinued
    2) she mentioned I phone 7 £36.55 per month. There would be an upfront fee and postage. Next..
    3) The iPhone 8 £46.75 per month/ £19 upfront cost +postage .
    Mmm. I pay around £33.00now
    4) I asked what she could do for me ,as I now can leave Vodafone .
She checked with her boss. Answer: The £19 upfront cost and postage would be waived. The offer was for today only ( total b s there )
She did mention that within6 months if not happy I could return the iPhone 8 and change tariff.
    5) I asked to call her back . Offshoot is, she will be calling me back .

You all mentioned a valid point . I love the phone I have . I agree with sim only. The iPhone X seems to have more negative feedbck than positive though I stand to be corrected.

I will go on the Vodaphone website now, and ask via live chat for the rundown of their sim only deals.
If it's not extortionate , then I'd probably stay with them and see what gives.

Further update : I got through to Vodafone via live chat on their website . Believe it or not , my contract is not up for renewal until July next year:o
All good . It means that when I receive the call from the sales people I will politely tell them no thanks .

Hi AC, probably a bit late but IIRC, the SE capability is the same as the 6plus and the video is better than the 7 so you would not be getting a better phone if you went for one of those. It was produced for peops who preferred the smaller handset. I heard they’re bringing out a new SE soon which would have to be at least equivalent to an 8, which may coincide with your contract end so maybe wait and see?
Did you know you can spread payments interest free directly from Apple now? Buying a phone from them and a sim from elsewhere is going to be much cheaper.
Another vote for giffgaff though, unlimited everything for £20 a month and you can cancel at anytime because you only ever pay for one month.
I love the look of the Red iPhone but I too have a perfectly good SE so won’t be changing it yet.
