Availability of theatre space is not generally the problem, it's the lack of ICU/ high dependency beds that is. Even if there is a bed available on the private ward, there still needs to be a HD bed free in case of complications

Not sure how you can know that without knowing what the surgery is?

Lack of beds, lack of staffing, lack of theatre capacity, they all combine to result in cancelled ops and longer waits.

The Tories have damaged the NHS though it is foolish to think that isn't the case.
I believe it is their hope to destroy it to the point the public turns on it saying it doesn't work and then everyone will need private healthcare if they can afford it or not.
I know all the parties are rubbish in their own way but Conservative government is very bad for the NHS (and all who use its services)

I think the best thing you can do is keep being vocal to the trust about how this delay is affecting your daily life and hope they get you in as soon as possible. Hospitals do take complaints seriously even if they can't do much about it.

It's not the Tories, it's the expectation that the NHS will deal with everything. It is an out of control monster that needs a grass roots rethink on its actual purpose. You could probably allocate the complete GDP to the NHS and it still wouldn't be enough.

The NHS has been severely limited by the unprecedented rise in population. Remember who opened the gates next time you vote.

Absolutely right... The NHS is keeping people alive so there is unprecedented number of people that are living longer with multi-morbidities. If we didn't have all these old people, there wouldn't be a problem.:):)

Fortunately.... Immigration has enabled the NHS to keep going by being an important supply of doctors, nurses, cleaners etc etc.
  • Private healthcare will pay for my operation just private hospitals don't have the kit required. I didn't know before being in this position that private can't do all the operations nhs can.
To address the taking the space of nhs patient. I am one, who has 3 weeks left of the 18 weeks and I am being told they can't book in a date yet. they plan ops a month in advance so not going to meet the 18 weeks deadline. So I really not upset that I would be taking someones place to be heartless about it, as I really should have a date and the operation by now.

I'm another one who thinks we should have a grown up conversation about what we expect the nhs to do in the 21st century.

But we won't because anyone who dares suggest that is automatically shouted down as wanting to get rid of it.

As far as going private is concerned my attitude is either go fully private or not at all....it smacks of the private health company wanting the benefits of the members' cash but none of the outlay for the equipment that this operation will need

I can't believe there is no private facility that can offer the treatment you need, although it may not be covered by your policy. What is the procedure?

I'm just amazed that an insurance company would offer a policy to cover an operation which it was advised was required at the time the insurance agreement was entered into.

Sounds too good to be true - pay us £X00 (or even £X,OOO and we'll pay for an operation costing £12,000 and anything else which crops up during the term of the insurance. Or did the policy itself cost £12,000+ and it was only on the basis that they could get the operation carried out ahead of the NHS which led the OP to pay it?

Are you sure that no private hospital anywhere can't do the op for you? Maybe if you widened your choice geographically?
The NHS surgeon is quite likely to be the same surgeon who will do it privately so have you asked their advice about where it can be done?
  • I pay x amount each month and they cover any requirements for the year. The op was priced at 12k. I am coming off the back of a company arranged deal so pre existing was covered, I pay monthly fees and excesses. I can't really afford it, but made the decision for one year I would do without other stuff.
