nhs and private healthcare

I did check all the way up to signing the private healthcare plan paperwork. I didn't however get anything written down. my bad management. I was so desperate to get back on with my life how it was prior to this year, I wasn't really thinking it through. I can't understand if nhs has money problems why having people like me who can and are willing to pay for it, at their full recharge rates, would block these ops, plus we are off their stats. Actual hospital Stay is 3-4 days and my county hospital has a private ward so bed space isn't an issue on speaking to the private surgeon.
So you wouldn’t care if operations were cancelled to suit you a private patient? Surely you realise this isn’t fair on patients and also harms the hospitals 18 week target.0 -
Private work in NHS hospitals should be done outside of normal hours
Some procedures can't be done in private hospitals due to lack of facilities
I would suggest that you contact the secretary of your NHS consultant and (nicely!) tell them that you aren't going to let this go without an answer.
Some insurance policies have some quite ridiculous limitations

That wouldn't happen, as surgeons' private work is done outside of and in addition to NHS work.
This thread is quite an eye-opener though.. there but for the grace of God go I. I hope you manage to get things sorted, OP.0 -
Are you saying the operation can't be done in a private hospital or that your health insurance won't cover you to have it done in a private hospital but would pay to have it done in an NHS hospital privately?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I don't know why you think that, when so many of the problems were caused by who people voted for!
Waiting lists have got higher and higher in the last 8 years. That reality is now affecting you, just as it has affected many others and will continue to if there isn't a change in government.
I hope you don't have too much longer to wait.0 -

Availability of theatre space is not generally the problem, it's the lack of ICU/ high dependency beds that is. Even if there is a bed available on the private ward, there still needs to be a HD bed free in case of complications - effectively the NHS having to compensate where the private system falls down.
(I'm entirely in agreement with the principle of what you're saying, it's the OP that doesn't understand the limitations of the private facility they wish to use.)
OP, have you looked at having the procedure at an entirely private facility? What is the procedure that you need?0 -
I'd be interested to know more details of how this is panning out I must admit.
As I know I feel safer at the thought of "Oh well - if I need something the NHS refuses to provide - I can still get it on time etc" - if at a price I cant afford and another debt slung round my neck.
Put like OP is - means wondering if any of us have got that fallback position if the worst comes to worst.0 -
have you considered getting it done outside UK? France? Spain? etcI am not a cat (But my friend is)0

I do believe that NHS problem isnt going to be solved by who I vote for. knee jerk actions win votes but still nothing is fixed in long term. I'd still have this issue under any government. still got to work out where I go next to get my op and life back to normal.
The Tories have damaged the NHS though it is foolish to think that isn't the case.
I believe it is their hope to destroy it to the point the public turns on it saying it doesn't work and then everyone will need private healthcare if they can afford it or not.
I know all the parties are rubbish in their own way but Conservative government is very bad for the NHS (and all who use its services)
I think the best thing you can do is keep being vocal to the trust about how this delay is affecting your daily life and hope they get you in as soon as possible. Hospitals do take complaints seriously even if they can't do much about it.Trying to lose weight (13.5lb to go)0 -
