Most programs that are not made by the big companies - ie, most free or cheaper versions of software like graphics editing programs, movie editing suites, won't work on vista and if you do need to get programs made by companies like microsoft, adobe, etc, you will need to get the latest version as the older ones (usually available a LOT cheaper with only slight differences) won't work.
I'd wait at least a year or 2 before getting vista. If you're using only the programs you get with it - ie, word, internet, email etc, it's fine, but anything else and people are still having problems.
ABSOLUTE UNADULTERATED RUBBISH.
Out of all the software I've got, some of which is several years old, ONLY ONE THING DOESN'T WORK - Colin McRae Rally 2005.
All my free/Open Source software works. All my other software works with the exception of CMR5. Hell, I've even got Commander Keen/Wolf3D - DOS GAMES FROM 1991 - running.
My computer does as much on Vista as it did on XP. All my hardware works.

if you have got a bt homhub, i would stick with xp for now, for general surfing it is fine, but i sometimes download stuff from the net, and since i transferred to vista, everytime i download anything from the internet, i cannot view any pages on the net at the same time, just keeps saying web page not available at the moment, i never had this problem in xp, so must be a compatability issue with vista and the bt homehub, whilst i am at it, sorry for jumping in on your post, but does anybody know of a decent but cheap router to buy, for the reasons mentioned, i heard netgear are good, but dont know which one to get, and the cheaper the better, thanks, DaveTake every day as it comes!!0

have to agree with you. only thing I've had problems with is my creative zen micro but thats more to do with creative being rotten about drivers etc.
are you sure about colin mcrae 05 because i've got it running fine on vista ultimate.
as for the op i'd prob stick with xp as you need it for work but don't be put off by the scaremongers who don't know about compatiabilty mode or are either just plain stupid or scared of change.0 -
Conor, I'm sorry if I offended you at all. I was only trying to help and offer what I have experienced from vista. Lots of people seem to be having problems, in my experience - looking at more than one PC - Vista tends to be incompatible with SOME older versions of programs. For example, Pinnacle movie editing software crashes at startup with vista. I could mention more.
Then again I've had trouble getting games designed for 98 to run on XP, everybody's computer is different. I just think it was very rude the way you belittled my post like that.
Nenen, if you buy a PC from a high street shop you could ask if it's possible to have XP on it from the beginning, or if you have XP on your current PC it may be possible to transfer the licence if you are not using the old PC any more. You'd have to check that drivers are available for the components though.I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right0 -
well i litteraly upgrade to xp last night!!!0

Quote "2) I have remote access to my workplace that allows me to access my emails in Outlook at work. However, my IT manager has said that anyone getting Vista won't be able to have remote access to work. In practice, at the moment I rarely use this anyway and I wouldn't be too bothered. However, we are hoping to move to using SIMs to enable us to write reports from home and this will upload them to work. If that happens I'd definitely want to use that. I'm not sure if the vista/Xp dilema will cause a problem there too and our IT manager is on holiday at the moment so I can't ask him!"
Hi,
I'm the IT bod at work and a few of our staff have purchased Vista systems for home. There is absolutely no problem having remote access with it. In fact it is a lot easier to set up than an XP system. There is a big but though. It will not work with Outlook Web Access as it will not download and install the security certificate. This is a known fault that is waiting to be corrected. If anybody knows a work around then I would be pleased to hear.
In summary: - If you access via a VPN connection and you are using a local copy of Outlook then it is fine. You can access shared drives just fine also.
The above information was from test with Vista Home Premium and Vista Business. I cannot vouch that Home Basic will work. I also cannot predict if your company uses any bespoke software that I am not aware of.0 -
Oh well thats just great, i was only browsing through the threads to see if my choice of laptop ( HP Pavilliondv9565) was the right one when i stumbled on this thread which basically slags off vista to the hilt, now after 2 weeks of "laptop research" i think i'll have to start over and find something else, trouble is all the new laptops seem to include vista which is why i thought this must be the new must have thing in computerworld. please help me i just want a better model than the one i have now which is dated and slow due to lack of memory and kids playing games such as sims etc. I only use my computer for a few things and am by no means a hardcore pc techie junkie, I just want things to open, close and respond at a decent speed.0

Friend has a problem with USB ports on a new laptop running Vista, none of them work nor do they seem to have ever worked. No exclamation marks in the Device menu and when properties checked all seem to be "working", would this be a laptop problem or Vista, sorry if this seems a silly question
