XP or Vista?

I'm looking to buy a new desktop PC and in a dilema about OS. I have 3 main worries and would really appreciate some advice:

1) I currently use XP and so do my 3 children. We all use a remote connection to broadband via a hub. If I got Vista (mine is the main pc) would this cause any problems for my children connecting to the internet?

2) I have remote access to my workplace that allows me to access my emails in Outlook at work. However, my IT manager has said that anyone getting Vista won't be able to have remote access to work. In practice, at the moment I rarely use this anyway and I wouldn't be too bothered. However, we are hoping to move to using SIMs to enable us to write reports from home and this will upload them to work. If that happens I'd definitely want to use that. I'm not sure if the vista/Xp dilema will cause a problem there too and our IT manager is on holiday at the moment so I can't ask him!

3) I have heard there are all sorts of problems/glitches with Vista. Is this still the case?

Thanks in advance (although I'll still press your thanks button for helpful advice too ;) )

not an expert on this but just recently i have downgraded to xp as from my vista as it kept clogging/working very slow. If you have alot of ram and a good cpu maybe.
I would wait until more programs/ devices are more supported and keep it simple with xp. Seeing as sevice pack 3 eventually will be on its way.

my advice would be to stick with xp for now. vista still has lots of issues.
some routers wont work with vista cause of security differences.
lots of intranets wont work either. a lot of companies dont see it as a priority to upgrade their networks yet.
    Get some gorm.
  • Also if you have kids I assume they play games - most won't work (properly or at all depending on the game) on vista. Most programs that are not made by the big companies - ie, most free or cheaper versions of software like graphics editing programs, movie editing suites, won't work on vista and if you do need to get programs made by companies like microsoft, adobe, etc, you will need to get the latest version as the older ones (usually available a LOT cheaper with only slight differences) won't work.

I'd wait at least a year or 2 before getting vista. If you're using only the programs you get with it - ie, word, internet, email etc, it's fine, but anything else and people are still having problems.
I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right

If you do go for Vista then throw as much Ram as you can at it (2Gigs) and a 'fast' (??) processor :)

Wow!!! Thanks for all the speedy replies everyone
It looks unanimous so far to stick with XP (pro sounds good). However, high street shops seem to give no choice... all vista. I assume Dell will let me choose, so that seems a point in their favour. I just HATE their awful customer support (or lack of it).

  • My main PC has XP Home and has been excellent and easy to use/navigate.
Recently purchased laptop has Vista home premium installed and personally I hate it and wish I'd gone for a XP Pro machine.
Too complex and fiddly in my opinion and in spite of having 2GB RAM and an Intel duo processor is slower.
It took me half an hour to find how to shutdown!! Why couldn't they just leave the illogical click "start" to stop?

  • I've been running Vista ultimate since it was released as a beta version, I've only had a couple of old programmes not working, true at the start it was dodgy with new drivers pretty patchy, but now it's much better, I changed to the 64bit version now and have had no problems, it's much better supported than ever and can only get better, but if you like XP stick with it, there is sp3 coming soon, it's going to be around for a long time yet, the wow is now vista has yet to wow me.
