An increase in your DD is not actually to your disadvantage whereas something like a change in the T& C's or a tariff increase is.
Increasing your DD is not the same as an increase in tariff - it usually means that you haven't or wont be paying enough to cover the cost for the energy that you are using. You can mitigate the effects of wild swing in your DD by reading your meters regularly, giving those readings to your supplier and making sure that the bills are corrected if they are using estimated.
If you are on a paperless contract then you'd expect any notifications to be on your on-line bill or statement. You cannot blame the supplier if you cant be bothered to check them occasionally. If it doesn't suit you then pay the extra for paper bills but I guess you wouldn't read those properly either..
