What are your parents saying about paying rent?
An answer isn't spam just because you don't like it......
  • What are your parents saying about paying rent?

They don't pay rent but they do pay a lot of the bills although some of the figures he has put in his spreadsheet are laughable. It was always our intention to start taking on more of the bills and we were starting to from last year but it seems patience isn't their virtue
  • Today, my dad has produced a bunch of figures listing his contributions to maintenance and whatnot since I took over the mortgage to justify him being 50% on the land registry along with me 50%.! Even though its unfortunate that my dad has produced almost a bill against me, its admittedly a sizeable amount.

You should stop using, and challenge anyone else who uses the completely misleading term "you took over the mortgage". You didn't. You bought the house from your father - allowing him to pay his mortgage off in full. He got to stay in the family home with no mortgage or rent to pay - you got on to the property ladder via him gifting you his equity as your deposit. As has been said, it was and remains a mutually beneficial deal. Remind your father of this and that he would be unable to be added to your mortgage. And yes, your lender would have to approve any amendment to the property's registered ownership.

Go to mediation, either family mediation or property mediation perhaps? That way you get a neutral third party helping you to solve it.
