O2 to giffgaff.

I've never been through this process before so wondered if I could get some hand holding.
I'm coming to the end of my contract with Carphone Warehouse very soon, but in order to save money I've been thinking of getting a sim only deal from giffgaff instead of upgrading. I'm happy with my phone, which is a Samsung S6.
I'm with O2 and know that I have to contact them to let them know that I want to leave and get a code for my mobile phone number to transfer it. My questions are:
Will my phone that I had through the CW contract still work with the giffgaff sim?
Is there a particular order that I need to follow?
Any issues with this plan that I haven't thought about?
Thanks.

GiffGaff runs on the O2 network so their SIM should work in your phone if it's locked to O2.
When there's one more month to the end of your contact's minimum term, call O2 to get your PAC (Porting Authorisation Code). This needs to be used within thirty days, by giving it to your new provider, and it will terminate your service and contract with O2 at that time. Using it within the last few days of the thirty will maximise use of your last month with O2 that you have to pay for. It usually takes only a day or two for the port to carry over.
O2 may well offer you a suitable SIM-only deal when you ask for the PAC, so in case you find that preferable you could hold off on buying any GiffGaff credit until then. They can probably give you a few days to think about it, then you can call back or just use the PAC. If the PAC is not used and you make no other arrangement or cancellation, your contract will continue as before.Evolution, not revolution0 -
Ive been with Giff Gaff for a couple of years- no complaints from me.0

As previously stated, giffgaff runs on O2 so you wouldn't have any problems switching to them, however, Carphonewarehouse phones generally come unlocked so any network should work on your S6.0

I've been with GiffGaff for about 5 years and have experienced no problems whatsoever.
If you have not already ordered a GiffGaff SIM and you would like a referral please drop me a PM.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -
Thanks for all the helpful advice. I will give O2 a ring and find out exactly when my contract ends.
Ms Chocoholic, I'm happy to contact you when I need to. Out of interest, what advantage is there to a referral?0 -
Each participating party gets free credit.
And the referee gets points that amount towards further credits etc.
Think of it as commission0 -

If your phone is locked to O2, ask for the free unlock code before you cancel the contract.
Giffgaff have data speed issues - you are better off using O2 or Tesco Mobile if you want O2 coverage. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I have moved from O2 to Giffgaff. I bought the handset which was exclusive to O2 and just put my Giffgaff sim in.
I had previously (about 2 years prior) moved my O2 number which I'd had with O2 for about 2 years over to Giffgaff.
Discounting the few minutes where neither phone worked as the numbers were switching, I had no issues at all.
I doubt it works as quickly if you do need to faffing around unlocking the handset and so on, but O2 and Giffgaff are connected brands and so it's a lot easier as a result.0 -

There is no need to unlock for either giffgaff or Tesco Mobile as they both use O2 - being 'connected brands' is irrelevant.
The unlock suggestion is due to the (unlock) code being supplied free of charge on O2 pay monthly - it might not be after! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
