Glow worm cx 30 boiler has packed up

So I'm lying in bed, and for some reason I feel cold. I forgot to turn the boiler off. I check the boiler and see o o flashing . No f9 , just
OO . I press the reset button with a paper lip . No go. I can hear the boiler trying to work but it won't .
The annoying thing is it's in the small bedroom .
The other annoying things , is that a) it's Easter weekend. Which means I won't be getting it looked at anytime soon b) I have been in this flat a year and was gonna book a yearly service this week.
I couldn't do it any sooner as the flat was a mess( &stll is ) because I just had a new kitchen installed..

As it's a combi boiler and the numbers are flashing , there is nothing I can do . There is no way to turn off.

Have I missed something ?
Thanks . Sorry for the rant .

    Pressure @ 1 bar?

  • Thanks Ruski. Not sure I understand . It's flashing 0-1

Normally if there is a fault it is f 9 . I've tried everything..I think
  • I decided to leave a message with the gas company who passed my boiler when I moved into the flat last year. They are open on Monday , albeit skeleton staff, with the normal hours being Tuesday onwards.
Just hoping they won't be too busy ..

What's the make and model? Does the maunal give you any clues regarding the fault code?

Pressure @ 1 bar = is there any pressure in the system? How would you normally check that??

  • Thanks again russ
It's a glow worm combi . Normally if there's a fault ( there hasn't been until now) F9 should appear . What I should do then ,as I have been repeatedly doing is reset it by putting a paper clip into the hole and that should reset it and job done .
Unfortunately , everything shows up at once when resetting it .
Then the number O.1 appears. I have managed to get it above that number but it goes back to O.1 immediately .

When I do try to reset it ,there is a clicking noise albeit briefly .
Sounds like it's trying to ignite . Common fault by the sounds of it .

There is no point reseting the boiler lockout until you have cleared the problem that is causing the lockout.

It seems obvious from your description that you simply need to re-pressurise your system until it displays 1.0 Bar on the display and not the 0.0 or 0.1 currently displayed.

You should not need to call anyone out to do this simple job if you can turn a tap on i.e. run a bath or fill a sink!

The taps to do this task are under the boiler connected together via a pipe - see below.

Open the cold water inlet tap under the boiler (A)

Slowly open the filling tap (B) until a pressure of 1.0 Bar is indicated on the display, then close this tap (B) and the cold water inlet tap (A).

Now you can do a reset.

0.1 will be the pressure, it should be 1.0, the boiler wont work until you top it up.

Look under the boiler and find the filling loop, then open the taps until you hear water running into the system, the pressure will rise, once it hit 1.0 turn off the taps, be sure to do this. press reset and it will work.
  • Thanks for that chaps . The boiler is in the small bedroom underneath the window  it is housed in a makeshift wooden box.
I’ll look into this tomorrow if I’m brave enough.
    :o
  • Just bent down on the floor. I could see the two white taps. Both say closed. I think A is on the right, and B on the left?
I'm a bit worried if upon turning the taps, the pressure would be strong and that I'd be unable to turn them off in time .
Living on my own and partly disabled , I'm erring more to the side of caution and thinking of waiting for engineer to come.
If the boiler wasn't boxed in under the bedroom window , I'd be more confident. I have a friend who lives locally. If he is free , then I may ask him to pop over.

Years ago, I bled one of the radiators in the kitchen . Trouble was, the pressure was so strong I had a nightmare situation . The 2 previous rads were ok , but this one was shall we say 'awkward'. So you understand my caution . :o

Bleeding a radiator is opening a valve to the atmosphere, and water can/will escape - leading to your previous experience I should think.

Adding water to 'top up' a sealed system is NOT exposing anything to the outside world and you will not get wet. Just try the taps a small amount - you should be ok. Remember you have two options to shut off the fill (two valves), I have never come across BOTH valves failing :)
