Buying from Gumtree - payment protection etc?
Options
Hi all,
I am making enquiries with someone local who is selling some iPhone X's. He's selling TWO 'brand new iPhone X unlocked'.
They are selling for £900 each.
I have contacted him and the conversation has gone as follows:
How come this phone is cheap than the RRP? Is it brand new? UK phone? What's the reason? Thanks.
Me - 23:32
Yes this phone is brand new sealed on o2 and its a contract upgrade, i want a quick sale that is why i have put it for that price
Abdullah - 23:37
When did you buy it mate and I’d need to see a receipt/proof of contract or whatever please. Thanks.
Me - 23:48
I have the receipt to prove that I have brought it on contract and i got it last week
Abdullah - 23:50
Cheers Abdullah - so you got this as part of a contract upgrade but you’ve kept your old phone kind of thing? Are you able to attach the receipt please? Sorry to ask, just a lot of dodgy people on Gumtree!
Me - 00:13
Yes that's correct and its £900 for one not 2 just so you dont get confused and i sure will do that first thing in the morning tomorrow
Abdullah - 00:38
Yeah I thought that. How come you’ve got two phones to sell if you got this as part of a contract upgrade? Thanks Abdullah.
Me - 07:12
So I am expecting the receipt from him.
Obviously, I am not naive enough to think that it looks too good to be true - but is there anything that I can pay with (I don't have a credit card, but have PayPal) so that I am protected should it turn out dodgy (for whatever reason).
It is claimed that it comes with a warranty, is there any way that I can check that?
Thanks for any advice.

Paypal NOT FRIENDS AND FAMILY
OR BANK TRANSFER
You could find the phones blocked as reported stolen at some point in the future. Why do they have two? He will also be paying in his contract with 02 for phones he no longer owns. What happens when he decides to stop paying?
Oh, and Gumtree is for face to face buying not sending throw the post.
That sound is Quacking, looks like a duck walks like a duck and quacks it is a duck0 -
The simple rule is not to buy electronics via Gumtree unless you are prepared and can afford to throw the money away.0

If he's stops paying then O2 will blacklist the phone(s) and all they'll be are paperweights.0 -
I would never buy ANY phone from Gumtree because its so easy to scam the system. But, come on £900?? !!!!!!. Youre seriously just thinking of saving £99 per phone, buying from someone you dont know, and have no comeback if something goes wrong/phone gets blocked etc?
Just buy off the apple store for a bit more, and at least youre fully covered.0 -

Thanks, yeah, I thought that - appreciate your concern. No receipt produced either - just not worth it.0 -

It's a 256gb version - but I completely take your point. The extra money for something reputable is totally worth it.
Thank you.0 -

Good decision.
For peace of mind buy off an official source especially for a phone of that value. At least you're covered and the law is in your favour.0
