Most mobile receipts do have the IMEI on them, so if it's the original receipt that wouldn't be possible.

Still don't think it's sensible to drop almost £1k on a phone from Gumtree though when one from a proper retailer isn't that much more...

Yeah good point - and he never came back with a receipt anyway!
