5p OFF SHELL PETROL credit card deal

Shell petrol stations are offering a credit card via their web site which offers 5p off per litre of fuel for 60 days. If I pay up when the demand comes through and throw away the card after 60 days this seems a good deal. Any comments?
P.S. My local Shell matches Tesco for price.

If you buy your fuel at Tesco and use a tesco credit card you'll get 2 clubcard points per £1 spent, which equates to 8p per £1 if you convert to clubcard deals (airmiles, Marriott hotels, AA to name a few)

This sounds better to me although it entirely depends whether you're nearer a Tesco or a Shell garage....

I thought that this was worth signing up to, additional benifits that I thought gave this card value are the free motor legal cover ,(maybe £20 if added to your motor insurance), and the free purchase protection,(especially as Tesco has stopped providing this!)

Is anybody aware of where the best signup deal is for this card?
  • Timmne, good point. Never thought about that. Generaly pay cash for fuel at tesco but flash the clubcard. Will now use my Tesco C/C for added points.
Holiday in Jan 07 with XL.COM £1200. £600 cash & £600 in clubcard points. Very nice.
ps anyone want some cheap talc, I've got lots.

Wonder how many people on MSE have turned whiter-than-white in the last week due to talcum powder overdose?

This only applies for existing card holders mate. The new card only offers 1 point per £4.00 spent elswhere and 5 points for every £4.00 at Tesco

your better off with a cashback credit card, and combining it with Tesco deals e.t.c.

Unless you have a clubcard plus....... ;) (2 points per £1)

I am considering getting a shell card after the 4% deal ends on my capital one. There is a Shell petrol station 100 yds from where I work and it is always 2-3p a litre cheaper than the tesco which is a mile away from where I live. Plus I prefer Shell petrol (especially after the petrol/ silicone fiasco!) and can always use the V power in my car.

You can't beat cold hard cash as an incentive :)

6% cashback on Shell fuel purchases for 60 days then 3% thereafter
and 2% back on all other purchases for 60 days then 1% thereafter.

Link to the Citibank Shell card for anyone interested:

I tried applying for this card and they said they were going to send me a form out because the website was having problems and it never arrived.

So I thought if they are giving me this much trouble applying for a card imagine if I try to claim "Motor Legal Protection" or the "1 years extended warranty on electrical items". I opted for Capital One instead and it should be with me in a few days hopefully.

Also the cashback is credited straight onto your card for Shell fuel purchases, no cheque like Morgan Stanley and you have to fill up from Shell once a month otherwise you lose your cashback.

    Is that on the T&Cs

Don't like that bit. Even though I work next to a shell station there may always be an occasion when I don't fill up that month.

Had been considering this myself, seeing as my local Shell is about 2p per litre less than Tesco and I fill at Shell anyway, but have looked a little closer.

Agree, but this is not cash as fayraz has said:

which is also true, but I am not 100% sure about the last point:
you have to fill up from Shell once a month otherwise you lose your cashback
The Shell rebate is described in section 35 of the T&Cs, though not particularly well.

It does suggest that if you don't make a fuel payment in the month, you don't get money off that month (makes sense as there is nothing to deduct it from). It also states that you lose cashback if you don't buy fuel for six months. Therefore, it's a grey area (following the T&Cs to the letter) as to what happens for cashback where the most recent fuel purchase is roughly over one month but less than six months since the last.

I would hope that if, for example, you buy fuel at Shell every two months, any Shell purchase on a statement is reduced by rebates earned in the previous month and the month before that. However, there is nothing mentioned about any rollover.

Anyone have the card as a low user and know what happens? I could always phone up and ask but I don't trust getting a correct response from call centre staff on something not well covered by the T&Cs.

Of course, as a low user this might not be the best card. But I expect to do a lot of miles over December and 6% back is better than 1% from my normal card, but my miles will tail off in January/February.
  • Shell have not given me the 6% cash back for buyin petrol at Teversham, cambridge Shell garage. I rang them and apparently it isn't a Shell garage... not all are!

So check your statement to see if you are getting the correct cash back - they are looking in to it, but if they refuse to pay the higher cash back at Shell garages, surely this is fraud?

Heck, I even picked up the leaflet for the Shell/citi credit card at that garage!!
