Thank you Ant555 but I'm in Bristol. Appreciate your reply though.

Try C&L Windows, Seymour road, Gloucester. I have not had dealings with them for a couple of years, so no vested interest here. They have a sound reputation. Regardless, even if you are outside their area they were using MB Windows at Bristol as their sole supplier circa 5 years ago. So with C&L and MB as contacts I am sure something can be arranged for you. All the more so if you say there has been a plug on this Forum and you do not want to feedback anything negative!

Be cheeky, put them on the spot and see what happens!

Direct labour fitters too, which is a bonus - unless matters have changed in recent years.

But if no joy do not blame me!

I've not ever needed to buy double glazing, but have had Price Glass on Ashley Down road recommended to me in the past. Have walked past their shop several times in the past and though they have products on display, they look like a place that does glazing stuff, rather than a fancy showroom.

Just spent an hour looking online at a few different companies. For some of them I had to fill my details in to get more information (they were the bigger companies) & guess what, phone calls almost immediately. Some asking me who I live with?!?! erm... how is THAT any of their business? I wonder if they ask everyone that?!?! How odd! Mind you, by that time my back's already up so not taking the feeling of being harassed too well!
The chaps who fitted my carpets were great so I'm going to pop my head in their door & see if they know anyone.

They ask you the who do you live with question, so that they can do the high pressure sales pitch to the pair of you. Companies that try this on me get told to foxtrot Oscar.

Get quotes from local companies who do not use salesmen on commission.

You'll be looking at £5k or less for that sort of work. Doors are about £1k a piece, windows depend on size and what openers you have on them but they're only £2-300 each. So not as pricey as you'd maybe think.

My advice would be don't use anyone who expects so much info upfront - who you live with is so they can hard sell you, or insist you're both there so you can't wiggle out of their hard sell by saying 'I'll have to check with my partner' as they want you to sign then and there. Try and find a nice local company - do you have a local Facebook page to ask for recommendations?

Oh wow! that would be a lot more easier to save for (well, less than £10k anyway)!
    thanks for sharing! :T

Be savvy all round. You do not want an anonymous double glazing web company getting involved. Usual warning signs - including no address, and no installer details. I then despair when I see they specialise in boilers and solar panels too. Really, what next? Perhaps they will be offering a dog walking service to old men named Terence. Perhaps they will call round with a can opener to open his tins of Spam?

But neither should you be taking up the suggestion to get folks down from Mansfield. Be realistic here. Those folks have a business to run and travelling to Bristol to give a quote purely to help you arrange your savings? Come on now - that is not acting like a considerate and professional consumer.

You want to be taken seriously so whoever you ask keep it local and avoid the Web!

Avoid the cold callers. I had 2 companies refuse to even come and quote unless my husband was there. One company turned up, then told me it was illegal for him to do the quote without my husband there!! I told one company that I was single, just so I could get a quote. They came back with £1800 for ONE window, after an hour long spiel. Which they miraculously got down to £940 when I said 'ummmmm nope'. When I lived elsewhere I got 5 windows done for £1k.

So I rang a local company who came, measured, and rang me the next day with a quote of under £400 for two windows. No issues with my husband being out, and no 'sign up now for this deal' pressure.

Exactly this! The cold callers & big companies pile on the pressure which just makes me want to run... & run I will! Local seems to be the best way to go!
    Thank you for replying

Thanks! It's good to get an idea of roughly what I'll need to have irt £££, the advice is great too.
Nextdoor used a national company, paid over £10k (they have a bigger house though) & had endless problems - like no letter box!
