You do have the right to a basic bank account, it's just that correct proof of 'you' is required.

Have you tried applying for a Loot account as I suggested? Unlike Monzo and Starling it's not a bank proper, so if they can ID you electronically at your address there may be less need for them to see proof, or perhaps the expired passport is sufficient if they do require something. It gives a sort code and account number, prepaid MasterCard, so all you need for now.

I gave it a try last night but it my camera won't focus the lens and therefore my passport never gets detected by the app's scanner.

Learning the difference between a bank account and a credit card might be a helpful way to start rectifying the situation?

Whether it is a bank account or a credit card that I am applying for, I'm stuck in the same situation either way. So does it really matter? I think not.

Have you tried Halifax? - I think they will accept a current EU identity card as proof.

Do you have anything from HMRC in the 8 years since you have been here?

Do you have a National Insurance number, if so can you give that?

Have you considered renewing your passport at the German Embassy or Consulate, whichever is closest?

Well it's a bit late for that now, I didn't find any alternatives at the time so this is the first one I went to.

It's not that I'm avoiding it, it's that this is currently literally impossible to do. It's not like I'm being stubborn and avoiding to renew my passport at all costs. I was just wondering if there were any other options where I can open some kind of account to put money in.

OK, I might be overreacting a little here. This is because exactly 2 years ago I was in a similar situation, but then I was struggling with my proof of address, not with the ID. I struggled for nearly two months trying a number of banks, going back and forth and my employer was totally refusing to pay me in any other way but bank transfer. Some of the banks were not following their own T&Cs. Well at the end I gave them what they wanted and now I enjoy playing with a number of bank accounts. I would suggest that you just set the wheels turning and do whatever necessary to renew your passport ASAP. This will solve your main problem and you won't be in need to bend the rules. I wish you success anyway.

Your mother could open a second current account, which would be exclusively used for your income. Every time your income hits, withdraw it as cash and use it for your leisure.

Its not a matter of "not finding" anything nor needing any kind of alternative - the Banking Forum has exactly the same prominence as this one, so your excuse simply does not wash..!

PM-ing a board guide to get this thread moved over would be the best solution - and it would increase your chance of getting effective, constructive help significantly.

Transferwise and Revolut are options that don't always immediately ask for ID (they will at some point though)
  • TL;DR - get the relevant ID and all will be sorted
