Can I use family members card for them?

Options
Hi, hope this is in the correct forum.

A close family member relies on me for certain tasks such as getting groceries and taking her to get hair done etc. To make things easier I have her bank card so she can just call when she needs anything and I can go get it without having to call to get the card then return it everytime.

This was previously done by my grandparents but due to changing circumstances they are unable to do this any longer so it's been passed to me. I provide receipts from the ATM and supermarket etc as matter of good practice.

The family member in question has agoraphobia and is very reluctant to leave the house for too long and never on her own. My question is are there any rules or regs against me using her card for her? I just don't want her to get a letter from her bank saying she has broken the T's & C's or something.

Thanks!

    No.

It literally happens all the time. BUT it does mean she's not covered for fraud protection.

She has broken the terms and conditions by giving her PIN to another person. In reality, loads of people do it.
    :p
  • You shouldn't be using someone else's card. Could you find another way of doing it - maybe you could have an additional card on her credit card account, or set up a pre-paid credit card that she can load with money for you, something like that?
  • As beanie says loads of people (including myself) allow people to use their bank cards and use other people's cards with their knowledge

If she's ok with using a banking app/online then she could transfer money to you that way as well as the other methods already suggested.

Both of my children have used my bank/credit cards for years. If your relative is happy with the arrangement, it is a matter between yourselves, imo.

Why make it so complicated though? If both OP and their family member are happy with the arrangement then I don't see any problem. The bank card police aren't going to swoop in and arrest them.

Loads of people do it without problems. But its not strictly kosher and if something goes wrong, you could be in a tricky position.

    No.

But any genuine fraud claim in future will fail.

My Dad and I used to be signatories on each other's bank accounts which we arranged with the bank in the days when we used to write cheques to pay bills. The cheque would be in my name but his signature was valid to use and vice versa. We were not joint account holders.

Could your family member contact the bank and ask if there is anything similar, for example can they authorise to give you your own card and pin for use on their account?
