Van Tax

We are looking at buying something along the lines of a Transit type van, we both have electric bikes and would like to take them with us on holidays and days away. The van would replace our car, are there any specific vans which don't have the high road tax, high commercial insurance and not restricted to the 50mph speed limit. Not to bothered on what manufacture, it would not be a new van, more looking at used vehicles. , Ok I can put a tow bar and heavy duty bike rack on the car, but not at all happy using bike racks, seen a few accidents on M.way with them, plus leaving car unattended with bikes on is not really very secure, bukes cost a lot of money, so much prefer them not to be seen. Any advice appreciated..Thanks

You need something less than two tonnes for the speed limit not to effect you.

Can!!!8217;t help you with tax or insurance.

As for accidents I!!!8217;ve seen more involving vans than cars with bike racks.

And also car-derived, so the choice is limited. No "Transit-type" vans.
  • You could think about a VW T5/T6 (or equivalent) reclassified as a motorhome. That would give you inside space for your bikes, and not be limited to the lower speed limits. Insurance would likely be cheaper as well, recognising the (typically) occasional use of such vehicles. But it all depends upon what your budget is.

If you plan to use the motorways the speed limit is 70 mph for a transit type van so no restriction, try getting a dummy quote for insurance, remember you will only be using it for pleasure and not hire/reward/business so might be cheaper than you think.

Not found any 4x4 or people carrier which will take full size bikes without taking front whhes off.

So a transit type that’s classed as dual purpose is subject to the lower speed limit?

Yes. (1) It's not car-derived, and (2) it's unlikely to be under 2 tonnes GVM.

    See https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/car-derived-vans-and-dual-purpose-vehicles/car-derived-vans-and-dual-purpose-vehicles#speed-limits

For a Dual Purpose vehicle, the limit is 2040kg unladen weight, plus roof, windows and seats or 4 wheel drive.

A Dual Purpose vehicle is not subject to the Goods Vehicle speed limits.

My son is a Stationary Engine enthusiast, takes at least two engines on wheeled cradles to Shows all over the UK. Sometimes takes another engine on his trailer. He drives a Vauxhall Combi 1.7 van and has no problem getting the two Engines inside. The van pulls all that without problems, but it has to be the 1.7 engine: the 1.3 is gutless.

He has built a reinforced steel bulkhead behind the front cab, with aluminium plates and there are tie-downs on the reinforced floor. I don't think you would have any problem getting your bikes inside and there would still be room for luggage, etc. The ride and seats are quite comfortable: I have spinal problems and regularly ride with him.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
