I think that what each company considers reasonable as mitigating losses should be clearly explained in the policy documents. I wouldn't mind staying behind on a short haul flight, but I wouldn't split the family for either a long haul or one with an onward connection.

Have you checked that your travel insurance would cover you if you took that action?

I guess any eventuality is insurable if you pay enough, although mass market insurance is not usually tailored to individual requirements.

We have insurance through our Flexplus account and I will be checking it out. However, I doubt it would affect us really as our kids are grown up now and we usually travel as a couple.

My point was to simply say "mitigate risks' without giving examples such as the one the OP is facing is not enough imo.

As long as you are prepared/can pay for this then its your choice,if however money is tight then what ever your insurance covers would be the way to go.

The OP has posted on Tripadvisor and the general concensus is that it was right that he was denied boarding because of his son's sickness (which I agree with).

It was being treated as a 'no show' for the original flight when re-booking that didn't sound right to me.

This is one of the replies - which I also agree with:
I do think that if you deemed a no-show, this is erroneous/bad practice.. IMHO, you were a denied boarding (but due to conditions, ineligible for traditional V/IDB comp) due to ineligibility and therefore your reticketing subject to the fees/policies for these kinds of situations,
I'd go back to QR and ask for more details how this conclusion came to be, with the standards/rules that were applied -- and if it is was correctly classified, I'd politely request a supervisory level review.
