Funny how I know the dates my MOT, tax and insurance is due without needing a reminder sending in the post. Its almost like I have something I can write it down on.

Never rely on others to tell you when something is due, always make sure you know.

I'm the same although until a few years ago all 3 were due in the same month but Ive changed my car so Ive now changed it so my car insurance is still due in the same month but service, mot and tax are due October /November time so not too bad.

Just had a snotty reminder letter from DVLA that I hadn!!!8217;t taxed the car by 1st March...

Yeah, they do that kinda thing.
when car tax included a disk it was fairly obvious when it is due.

It still is - it's year after you last taxed it. I have a reminder on my phone and there are also online services that remind you.
Is it common for tax reminder letters to go missing (or not be sent)?

Not as common as it is claimed to be. Like a lot of other unwanted correspondence.
Speaking with a roads police officer, apparently mistakes on the DVLA database are not an uncommon situation...

That is certainly true. There was a spate of guys mysteriously loosing some of their driving entitlements when licenses were renewed some years ago. Got the point where some were keeping their old licenses until the new one arrived as evidence of their entitlements. (DVLA would otherwise only accept copies of your pass certificates as evidence, which is a little difficult when you passed the particular test decades ago)

given that you can check when any car's car tax is due by typing the reg in to gov.uk website, there is not really any excuse for not knowing when your tax is due ...

    Good point

    I am, therefore I think.
