No car tax reminder!

Just had a snotty reminder letter from DVLA that I hadn’t taxed the car by 1st March... no reminder here, obviously when car tax included a disk it was fairly obvious when it is due.

Is it common for tax reminder letters to go missing (or not be sent)?

I once had a “fine” for not taxing a car, the tax disc was from a regional DVLA office and was current, I didn’t receive an acknowledgment from DVLA when I pointed out their mistake. Speaking with a roads police officer, apparently mistakes on the DVLA database are not an uncommon situation...

  • I've never not received one in twenty years but I guess it can happen.

We do get other peoples post delivered to us to much more than we used to so I imagine sometimes our post gets delivered wrongly too.

Same here, I’ve now put a recurring reminder in my phone...

Funny how I know the dates my MOT, tax and insurance is due without needing a reminder sending in the post. Its almost like I have something I can write it down on.

Never rely on others to tell you when something is due, always make sure you know.

  • I always used to get reminders through the post.
Treated myself to a new car just over a year ago, VED due Jan, nothing received, I had to use details off V5 to complete payment due.
Contacted DVLA, was sent an e mail reply saying they would investigate and reply to me, not holding my breath!
    I am, therefore I think.

    Best tax it, then.

It's not unknown. How many do you think are sent out a year?

Same here but that is because I put the dates in that useful thing called a diary every year.

I get an email annually but I've set up a direct debit for it as it's only £20 so they just tell me they're billing me

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

if you used to rely on a disc to remind you that the VEL was due, here's a tip:

    1. Get a bit of paper, a pencil or pen and some sticky-backed plastic (e.g. "Sellotape" or similar).
    2. Write on the paper "VED [or tax or whatever suits you best] due [for example] 1st April 2018"
    3. Use the sticky-backed plastic to stick the paper, writing side visible, somewhere inside the car where you will see it.

Job done! You could even add the date the MoT test is due! :T

Sorry to be facetious but as has been said, you should never rely on reminders being sent to let you know when important tasks are due.

Very little post actually goes missing. A disproportionate amount of that seems to be NIPs, PCNs and tax reminders.;)

This got me thinking to confirm how to check if Road Tax is due?

    https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax

Go and enter Reg then it will tell if Tax due or not.

Then enter 11 Digit reference number of V5C and you can confirm rate of Tax and when it is due.

No reason ever to not have your vehicle not taxed correctly.

    Also has details of MOT.
