I can't stay with my husband anymore.

Hello everyone,
I just found out that my husband has been having an affair for a number of years and also has a young child and I'm so angry and sad that I can't stay under the same roof as him but I don't know where to go. He also basically said that he doesn't give a damn if I leave the house.

I currently work part time in an agency and make about £800-£900 a month after tax and I've been looking at single rooms in the area but the minimum price seems comes to at least £500 a month. I also have to send about £200 to my family who I look after.

My husband and I currently rent a house where he pays the rent and I pay the bills and other household things.

I'm just looking for some advice on what I could do? Could I go and talk to someone at the council or citizens advice?

Some advice would be really nice. Sorry if this is posted in the wrong part of the forum, I wasn't fully sure about which section would suit better.

Thanks for reading.

    Do you have kids?

If yes, clearly that complicates matters.

If not, there's just yourself to worry about.

Depending where you are, I suspect £8-900 is not enough to rent an alternative property and still be able to cover bills/expenses, so you're looking at friends, family, or house-share.

Unless husband is willing to finance you, which sounds unlikely.

Longer term, a divorce settlement might see you getting a maintenance payment, though again this might not be much if no kids, ad of course deends on length of marrigae, husband's income, and other factors.

Yes we have 1 but she's all grownup and lives in another country.

Why do you have to send £200 to your family?

As you work for an agency could you not get employment nearer to your family temporarily and stay with them as you are contributing to their upkeep. This may give you a bit of breathing space to work out your next steps.
I may not have thanked you but I meant to, honest!

Do you rent privately or are you a social tenant?

I send the £200 to look after my parents and they live in a different country

    We rent privately.

I don't have any family here, I do have friends and I'm seeing if anything can work out but I feel bad about straight up asking them if I can stay in their house.

I actually don't really have any attachments that keep me in this area but I've lived here for nearly 20 years so wanted to see if there were any alternatives otherwise I guess moving away might be the only solution.
  • The only way to get housed by the council nowadays is to have a child under the age of 18 or for you to be disabled or undergoing treatment. I am truly sorry to hear of your plight. Are you able to stay with family or friends for an immediate escape? Ideally you need time to save some money. Do you have an attachment or commitment to the area you currently reside in? Could you not move somewhere cheaper?

Book an appointment with your local CAB office. They will be better placed to provide free professional advice for your situation.
This may involve such charities as Women's Aid, as you don't need to be physically abused to get help.

    House shares?

One of my friends rents a room in a 3 bed house. I think they all pay about £150 a week. She has met a couple of new friends doing it.

Places like gumtree can be good for things like that or speaking to some estate agents.

The cheapest way to live would be as a lodger; I have a lodger who will only be here for a few more months.
Something temporary could work for you? I don't live near Sheffield, but there are web sites were you can search for a room.
My first lodger is very good, but finding the right lodger/landlord is a gamble.
