The Great ‘Store Returns Policy’ Hunt. Who, what, where and when?

  • Yes, Gap did offer a great policy where you could get the difference back if you bought something that was reduced in price shortly after. They published this on a little sign beside the tills, but the sign disappeared spring-ish. I asked about the policy around that time, as I'd bought my daughter a coat, and it subsequently had 50% off, and I was told that they were keeping the policy until July (07), but were no longer openly publicising it. So no more nifty savings there for me...
Please be nice to me, I'm new...
    • M&S - not very flexible following change of policy
    • I returned an unused coat with tags and receipt (purchased for my toddler). I bought it when their winter stock came in and guessed the size he would be a few months later. I decided it needed to be bigger to last all winter and returned. It was about 95 days so over their 90 day policy. I didn't ask for a refund - just an exchange for a bigger size. They refused. A customer in the queue behind me offered to return it for me. She returned without a receipt and they gave her vouchers! I then purchased size bigger! I no longer shop at M&S for toddlers clothes.
    • They didn't offer an exchange or vouchers with a receipt. But offered vouchers without a receipt!
    • Strangely enough better without receipt.
    • 90 days
    • Former customer
    • They claim they offer the best exchange on the high street, but I disagree. 90 days is good...........but see Pumpkin Patch post.
  • Worked on the customer service desk at Bhs (or British Home Stores if you're older!) for three years and had plenty of experience with refunds! Don't work there any more but this is the policy as of about two months ago!

Basically, if you return goods within 30 days, in a re-saleable condition, with reciept, you get a refund in cash or onto card. If you got any choice points with the purchase, they get taken off your card (which you must produce). Even if you've changed your mind, you will most likely get a refund. The 30 day period is normally extended over Christmas so you can buy early but still be able to return in the new year. If you're buying presents, ask for a gift reciept.

If you don't have your reciept, or it's been longer than 30 days, then you can get either an exchange (at the current selling price - that's a big reason you should keep your reciepts) or credit notes. Credit notes cannot be spent on food.

If it's an expensive item you're returning, and you haven't got a reciept ot its been longer than 30 days, then you may be offered a head office refund. Your details will be taken and head office will authorise a refund on the store's behalf.

Certain items are excluded. Food if it's been opened unless faulty, DVDs and CDs if they've been opened, and piereced jewellery. Also, if you've bought anything which has been reduced as it was faulty (it's called an allowance) then you can't return this either.

    Hope that helps

    Mike
  • Pumpkin Patch - best returns policy I have found. Not advertised.
Accept unused returns with receipt for up to two years.
I think they give refunds, but I am not 100% sure as I usually exchange for different size etc.
Need receipt, otherwise last selling price refunded.
Up to 2 years with receipt
I am a customer. Have taken my business from Next and M&S due to changes in their refund policy.
  • Asda have good returns policy - but watch out......
They have been known to resell used returned items!
My friend (a brown owl) returned plastic beakers she had purchase for pack holiday - they were faulty - some of the handles came off during use.
2 weeks later the items were back on sale - complete with the brownie pack name written on the bottom!!
  • This applies to Threshers, Victoria Wine, Bottoms Up, Huttons, Haddows, Drinks Cabin and (I think) Wine Rack.

I am a Thresher Branch Manager and, despite my many gripes with the company, the returns policy is both sensible and generous.

If you have bought any bottle of wine from us and don't like it, even if it's just not to your taste, you can return it for a full refund or you can choose another bottle of similar value.

This works particularly well if you're wanting to try something new - you know there's a safety net and you will not have just wasted your money.
  • Next internet purchase policy poor
Returns within 7 days of Despatch (via store / post)
Frequently takes 3-4 days from Despatch to receipt of goods (not sure if I have a slow courier, or if this is normal??)
Am only able to return items at weekend - so no longer purchase on line from Next as don't want to be stuck with items that don't fit / I don't like if can't make 7 day return
Would be fairer if 7 days from receipt of parcel.

    Yes Your Dukeiness :D
  • Store/Chain Name:

    Toys 'R' Us

Can you return goods without a problem?

NO! Bought Nintendo DS Lite for my daughters xmas pressie last year, come xmas day, we opend it, switched it on & found a pixel missing on the display, thus destroying the quality of the product!

Does it offer a full refund or credit note?

Would not refund/replace (even with receipt) as they say that there store policy states that unless there are 12 or more pixels missing they can not do anything about it! (Mmm no mention of this ANYWHERE in the store!

Did you need to have your receipt/a copy of the credit-card statement?

    Had receipt

    Anything else people should know

Dont take this #### of these people, I looked up on the net about buying goods from shops, and it clearly stated that when you buy a product/service it should be 100% correct, if not you are entitled to a full refund exchange. I had to write to there head office and complain, but I got a call back saying pop it into the store to see the manager (who refused me in the 1st place) and I can obtain a full replacement!, so I did. The face of the manager was a picture!:rotfl:
