I am OK as long as I stick to updating my spending diary every day. If I miss doing it for a day then I lose all motivation and it runs away with me.

I think my spending diary must be the key!
  • My spending diary and my snowball are mine :)

Hello - not posted for a while. I was all excited after my LBM and wanted to get this debt free journey started, but after my initial application for BT and entering my snowball figures things have tailed off and frustratingly I feel like I am in limbo - I have just been trying not to spend unless necessary. Payday today though and weirdly I am coming home wanting to see the CC bills on the mat so I can update my snowball figures! How sad am I? At the end of last month I had pence spare so hoping to be more careful this month and increase on that. How is everyone else doing? xx

  • I'm pretty much the same flumpkin. Swimming hard but just treading water to be honest. Really tight with the cash this month as had DD's 18th birthday yesterday but hopefully a bit of a quieter time next month :-)

Evening all! It has been ages and ages since I last posted and though I do read the forums now and then, thought I would drop an update to everybody. What has happened since I last posted?? Well, managed to get a new teaching job (on much better money), became a father to a beautiful baby boy last October and have managed to bust my debts under £14k for the first time. Although there is still a long way to go, I have made a huge effort to reduce the amount I owe and currently am paying back on 5 CCs, two of which are fixed for long term. I still owe £4800 on a Post Office MC at full rate but am hoping to clear this within 14 months. My aim, is to apply for a mortgage next summer although I want the debts to be as small as possible for obvious reasons!
Debt at lightbulb moment (June 2007) was £31,738.19
Debt as of 1st January 2010 was £21,905.82
Current debts total as of July 2014 £4,300

Just want to say just looking at your signature has inspired me! Well done on getting your debt reduced by such a staggering amount in five years?! And congrats on baby too

I read these posts a lot even though I don't say much myself but seeing how everyone deals with debt and life all at the same time really helps and makes you feel like you're not alone in this.

We need some more posts on here, we're all in it for the long run after all!

Sorry I haven't posted for a while, had a rubbish few weeks!

Stopped keeping my spending diary too which I knew would be my downfall!

Tempted to give up now until payday and then start again. Wouldn't have much to write in it anyway as I only have £30 to last me 2 weeks. Eeek!

That's just happened to me too, I was doing so well but my car broke costing me £150 which means I'm back to square one with all me credit cards! Nightmare

I split the money I have left into days and challenge myself not to spend each day, when you don't it makes you feel like you have more!

Welcome Katy and my apologies for being so long in responding; a combination of broken laptop (thankfully in warranty by the skin of its teeth!), a major operation (gastric bypass) and life in general being a struggle!
Spending diarys at the start are great and at times Ive gone back to basics..re blips on the journey there always are as life/circumstances get in the way! Plus we get in the way by self sabotaging at times! I have wondered over the years whether there is some security in being in debt which is ridiculous but concluded it was because it felt familiar...slowly getting there but can be frustrating when it takes so long but do think that over time my thinking has changed in terms of what I am willing to spend on things...at the start I would have spent hundreds on face creams etc and now balk at anything over £5!!
    Anyway...sorry a longwinded welcome!
great to hear peoples news and again, my apologies for such a late reply!
