Clearly I'm far too reasonable! Theoretically the kitchen geezers were arranging everything to do with the actual kitchen and we just had to choose the granite pattern. Not sticking with their supplier means faffing about elsewhere, but it looks like that's what we'll have to do, yawn.
Just got home. Plastering is looking good - they've done the big long wall in the bedroom, and also rounded some of the corners downstairs which is good.
However, they also seem to have bashed a large chunk off the edge of one of the stairs 🙄🙄 clearly just dropped something heavy on it and the edge has splintered off 🙄 Not a crisis but we don't really want them to leave it like that, which means (YAWN) yet another thing to bring up. Maybe they'll bring it up in the morning 🙄
Anyway, enough for tonight.
I had several free things today!!
* free pizza at an event we put on at work - ate one and brought one home for tomorrow
* two vouchers for tea and cake in the work cafe which have to be used by the end of the week
* £5 gift voucher which someone else had a big wad of and was giving out. Have to be used by Thursday though, and I don't think I can use them online so not even sure if that's going to work out.
* went out for tea with a friend from work to celebrate my funding bid and she ended up paying for the lot, bless her.
Worn out now, not used to all this activity!10 -

Worn out now, not used to all this activity! Our University is so tight about that stuff, we used to be able to guarantee being fed three days out of five for Freshers and Welcome Week, not so much as a vegan sausage anymore! You're right to walk away from the granite people. Ours were brilliant, showed us samples with prices per metre. came out, templated, quote for options like rounded corners, draining bord etc, fitted three weeks later. I had wood in our previous house, looked lovely, but a faff to maintain, I wouldn't have it again.2014 starting mortgage £165,0002015 second charge £20,000 - Jan 2021 paid off in fullCurrent outstanding balance - £115,8567 -
Thanks Chigle, yes that's Mr Cheery's thought about wood. Your granite people sound ace! I'll ring the others today and see if I can book for Friday.
Also need to ring the garage and get the MOT booked, completely forgot yesterday.
Working at home today, mostly shortlisting for a job. Woke up at 6am with period pain so it's probably going o be a long day 🙄 although hopefully I've caught it in time with painkillers so it won't get properly bad. I'd usually get in the bath, which helps considerably, but sadly the stupid boiler has been playing up and I can't run enough hot water for a bath 🙄 shower is fine, but won't work for this, so hot water bottle and grumpiness is my current chosen option 🙄
So we'll need to have the boiler looked at at some point. Don't think I can bear it while everything else is going on, but I suppose even if I ring someone now it'll probably be weeks before they get here anyway 🙄 it's been playing up for a while - the whole of last winter the thermostat would occasionally stop talking to the boiler - we had it looked at before lockdown, someone said they'd come back but then covid happened, and we learned a way round it, and I forgot who it was who'd been so I couldn't ring them back 🙄😂
Might start looking. There's a plumber working with the builder who's great but I suspect is the type to want to replace the whole boiler... and is also pretty busy. We'll see.6 -
OK, MOT booked for 14th, (rather amusingly, the garage bloke thought he was talking to someone else with my exact name 😂 Oddly enough I think I've been given her prescription before when the chemist was having an inattentive day... 😂
Stocked up on biscuits for the plasterers. Apparently the piece of the stairs just came off when one of them was walking on it 🙄 I'm not surprised to be honest, everything feels ready to fall apart at the minute. He reckons it won't be difficult to glue and pin back on (although didn't volunteer to do it himself!)6 -
Absolutely right to walk away from the granite people - you're being had over by someone somewhere along the line, I would suggest! You might remember we had Silestone for ours - more expensive than granite, and ours was fiddly too with several odd shapes and no significant long runs, but less than half the price of what you've been quoted INCLUDING the vat. I know our kitchen is smaller too, but there is definitely something not right, not to mention the appalling service you've had. I suspect you might be pleasantly surprised at the price difference once whatever cut "somebody" was taking is removed from the equation!
Hope the boiler gives itself a stern talking to and starts delivering hot water as it's meant to again soon! well done on the MOT booking too. I need to remember at some stage to alter my notes to reflect the new dates for MrEH's MOT and insurance - annoyingly his insurance is now 3 days removed from mine - which probably means next year I just renew mine early and have done with it!🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

Thanks EH, good to hear yours was cheaper! Ours isn't going to be that massive, and there won't even be that much fiddling - it's basically a horseshoe shape, with a hob in the left side, a sink in the middle (and going into the windowsill behind it), and then a wider breakfast bar thing on the right. So it might need a couple of bigger pieces, but nothing massive, and all the walls are straight (now 😂😂)
Booked to go and see this other place on Friday, as recommended by the builder. The guy sounded lovely on the phone, and they said they'll be able to give us a general idea of expensive/cheap materials, and if we take measurements (which we can as we have the kitchen plan) they can give us an accurate quote for different things. Fingers crossed...8 -
Ooh, interesting twist - kitchen geezers just turned up unexpectedly! Said they were in the local village doing something for someone else and popped in to get a measurement, but I can't help imagine it was some kind of damage limitation after our flurry of granite-related emails yesterday 🙄😂
Upshot is we told them how rubbish the granite people were, and told them we're going to the other place. They've said that's fine, although they prefer to work with their own fitter (who we've not met, but who is the one giving the prices). Offered to give us his phone number but not sure that's going to help at this point... 🙄
Anyway, cheerful all round but I think they've realised we're likely going elsewhere for granite... they did at least tell us the name of the one they quoted for which is a start!
Also they reckon they're likely to be ready before the builder's estimation - not sure whether that's damage limitation as well but I don't mind either way 🙄😂 Basically they're ready as soon as the plaster is dry downstairs.
Plasterer has been sticking some PVA on downstairs so hopefully that means they'll be starting at some point soon.
Getting there!
(Just realised I forgot to ask them about door handles, darn it!)8 -

Thanks greent, will check it out!
Can booked in for MOT (did I already say that?), covid study guy wanted to come today but I put him off til Tuesday, so that'll be £50 for the kitchen fund when it arrives. Mr Cheery applied for the final SEISS grant so that can be added to kitchen fund when it arrives too.
Did a couple more free bets for him last night - between us we're up to £178 on the Happy wheel this month! Will tot the extra for the kitchen fund tonight.
Oh, and keep your eye on your phones - Agent Million will be ringing today! 😁😁
