Wow, Cheery - you are *so* on the ball with the building work, as well as the finances. And I hope tomorrow goes well, that's a really early start, yikes.2023: the year I get to buy a car6
-
Ha, thank you! It feels like it's taking a lot of my brain power right now... Work is, I confess, down to the bare minimum I can get away with (which isn't actually very minimum given this is my busiest week of the year coming up tomorrow, but I'm looking forward to devoting more of my brain to it in a few weeks time!)
And yes, it's an early start, and I imagine I will object quite violently when the alarm goes off. But actually I prefer to get there early - there's no traffic, parking is easier, and then I get to leave earlier as well. Although as it happens Mr Cheery has decided to join me, so I won't need to park anyway - he'll just drop me off. If I'd known I wouldn't have bothered ordering a parking permit!8 -
Ha - the cashback that I thought would be about £37 has instead tracked at £1.26 Maybe they'll increase it once it's actually arrived and paid for?! Clearly the 20% didn't apply to the category of things I bought... Just goes to show why you shouldn't rely on cashback!10
-
Aargh - annoying when that happens with the cashback - and also funny how it feels as though the unexpectedly high cashback rates never DO apply to anything you might actually want to buy!
Absolutely get your feeling about going with a carpet for your bedroom too - the bedroom should after all be a bit of a sanctuary, and the additional soundproofing/insulation should make for a far more pleasant arrangement too. Carpets are one thing we still need to do around much of our place - although now the one is out of the hallway that will get replaced with hard flooring instead. I'm not looking forward to the upheaval when the front room needs doing!🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

It really sounds as if things are coming together now but I bet you'll be glad when all the workmen have gone.
Please don't forget that looking after yourself is doing something useful. You work hard, downtime is important too. It's not difficult!
'Wander' - to walk or move in a leisurely manner.
'Wonder' - to feel curious.5 -
Ha, yes EH - I feel the same about carpeting my study... there's a giant floor to ceiling bookcase in there and I am NOT looking forward to moving it. Hoping the room will be warmer now the radiator pipes are bigger, and we can ignore the whole lot for a while!
Definitely looking forward to getting rid of the manky bathroom carpet though 😮😮 Didn't seem any point til we could replace it with something better, and we didn't want to a temporary fix because we're replacing the bath as well, so the whole thing has been put off. It's on the list for next year...
Thanks hb, you're right of course, on both counts! Downtime is important, and I'll definitely be glad when everyone's gone!6 -
Plasterer has been today, painted some blue stuff on one wall (to cover old plaster/gloss i think) and plastered a section of another wall. I have to say he doesn't seem to be going very quickly 😂😂 but it seems like a decent job so that's good. He has left plaster dusty handprints all over the place though 😂
Flurry of activity this morning!
* cancelled spare hob
* told builder about smoke alarm
* booked to see granite tomorrow morning
* tried to book MOT but they were engaged and then I forgot.
Not too bad! We can make a final granite decision tomorrow, hooray! Then first appliances should arrive on Friday!6 -
Have to say I only have carpet in the bedroom.

We had the blue stuff done on our wall Cheery, I think it's to help the new plaster stick. It's such a relief when it's all over and your house is your own again.Mortgage start date Nov 2014 - £90,545 over 25 years
Re-mortgage Oct 2017 - 78,295 over 23 years
Re-mortgage Jan 2020 - 55,000 over 26 years @ 1.94%
Current Mortgage Outstanding Middle December 2020 - £47893.35 - a reduction of £42,652 in just over 6 years!8 -
Yep, that's what it's for bargainhunter - I didn't expect it to be blue! 😂
Granite decisions may be postponed - kitchen geezers emailed to say they'd forgotten to add VAT, so the cheapest ones are now £3912 instead of the £3200 ish they said the other day 😡 Not impressed - not because they forgot the VAT, but because of this whole stupid rigmarole of having to make choices without knowing ANY idea of price in advance! What a bloody fiasco! Our cheapest one is now over £1000 more than the originally quoted cost for granite, because they quoted for the cheapest, and won't tell us which the cheapest ones are!!
I've made my disgruntlement quite clear. If I can't get a price out of the geezers tomorrow then I'll be looking for a different supplier, and won't be doing it through the kitchen fitters, so they'll lose work for their stonemason, no whatever mark up they've presumably added 😡 Don't even know whether I can do that at this stage or whether I'm committed, but the alternative is that I just keep getting them to quote for every single one in the place until we find one that is vaguely close to the price they originally quoted!
I remember someone suggested (greenbee?) an online place and I never went back for a quote but maybe I'll do that in the morning instead... Am I being unreasonable?!
Builder has also emailed, with second invoice - he's doing them monthly which is fine. Fortunately I have enough in the kitchen fund to pay it without removing from premium bonds, so I can wait til after the next draw on Thursday! 😂 He's coming over in the morning with the electrician to sort out the smoke alarm - we were planning to go to town early and have breakfast before going to the granite place, but it would be good to just have a quick chat and check on timings etc if he's coming early enough have emailed back to check, but I'll text in the morning if I've not heard.
