I was thinking of you today Cheery.

Hope all went well with your new feathered friends today. Bless them I bet they are all snuggled up and warm together tonight getting ready for their new life when they get up tomorrow morning.

    Evening MSE chums :hello:

Well, I LOVE having chickens :j :j Such a steep learning curve though  and embarrassingly we still haven't finished the chicken run :o so they are temporarily housed in the stable block (!!) i never thought I'd see the day when I actually owned a stable block  and in reality that's a very grand name for what is essentially a breezeblock large shed type thing :o :rotfl:

Anyway, their little house is in their, complete with nest boxes & perch, and they have food and water and plenty of things to climb on and much crap to poke around in :o :rotfl: so they seem happy and are working out their pecking order by, er, pecking each other

Last night we went to put them to bed about 8pm and they were already roosting, so we went a bit earlier tonight and they were clearly not quite ready as it was a bit of a job to get them into the house... They've lived in a large barn up to now with thousands of other chickens so I guess they're not really used to being shut into a little house at night... hopefully they'll get into the routine soon enough...

Their run should be ready tomorrow. We've bought nothing new for it except a few lengths of timber and some nails - everything eose has been scavenged from stuff we've found lying round :money: Tis easy to pay hundreds of pounds for a gen house too but we made one from old doors and the front off a rabbit hutch I picked up from the tip :money:

Anyway, we had FOUR eggs this morning :j :j all laid in the nest boxes, clever girls! :j

Not much else to report. Still not rung wayleave people  (well I rang the first time but can't find the form I needed to return - I *might* have posted it but there's a chance it's lost in the debris...) Need to reply to buildings regs people. And I checked and MOT for the old car is due 21st Sept so need to think about that. And YNAB of course, and I need to order a repeat prescription.

    So many things!

Nothing else is getting done til the chickens are safely ensconced in their proper run though :j

    Thank you all :j

Another egg this morning, casually laid just in a random place on the floor of the hen house.... They'd managed to knock their perch off in the night too - goodness knows how as it slots into place - they must have pushed it up from beneath somehow  One of them was still in the nest box when I opened up this morning so I imagine there will be at least one more egg under her, possibly more :j

Yes they have names now :D I've gone for witches out of kids' books :D So Hermione and Luna from Harry Potter, and Mildred and Maud from The Worst Witch :D :rotfl: :rotfl:

Thanks all :) We've seen a fox round here too EagerLearner but as our ladies would have been dead already if they hadn't come to us we'll do everything we can to fox proof our run and hope for the best...
