The signal you would be measuring on a 2G phone would be the 2G partner that Three use for roaming, O2 or Orange, not the Three signal, for that you would need a 3G phone. The PAYG Sim is not 3g only.0

Thanks for that information. Ignorance is bliss as far as I'm concerned. I'll pop into my local 3 store and check how it works on their machine there. If it works fine in downtown Torquay it should just about work almost anywhere!0

It's true from when they switched the 2g roaming agreement to Orange, so applies to new payg SIMs from January, but I haven't checked since whether this has now extended to older ones; perhaps not.
This is correct, only sims that have Orange 2G roaming will work in any 2G phone, there are a few models of phone that will work with any 3 sim (eg the 6230i) but for reliable use in an old 2G phone you do need a sim issued since January.====0
