Do Three sims work in old style mobiles e.g. Nokia 1100, Nokia 2600 or do they only work in modern 3G mobiles.
  • Three sims will work in any 2G or 3G phone, providing the Phone is not locked to another network. And before anyone says that Three will cut you off if you are not using a 3G phone, no they will not!!! Not on PAYG anyway.

When I was on three contract, my SIM didn't work on normal phones.

It might be different on PAYG indeed.

It's true from when they switched the 2g roaming agreement to Orange, so applies to new payg SIMs from January, but I haven't checked since whether this has now extended to older ones; perhaps not.

Thanks for the replies. I've just ordered a 3 sim card on eBay for 99p - the seller suggested that it would work on all phones. I'll install it when it arrives (my phones are already unlocked) and will post the result here in due course. My reason for wanting a 3 sim is not for making phone calls but so that I can check the signal strength - I am interested in installing 3's new broadband internet to use at different locations in the country and thought that checking the phone signal strength first might give some indication of how well the broadband signal would work.
  • Wont the broadband work over the 3G network though, not the 2G, so trying a sim in an old phone for this purpose will be irrelevant?? Not 100% sure on this, but if you are relying on the 2G signal for the broadband connection this will be painfully slow anyway?

    Agreed! :rotfl:

My assumption that measuring signal strength on a 2G mobile would relate to the internet signal is probably invalid. However, no phone at all is required for 3's new mobile internet - just a modem/dongle that connects directly to the PC and I just thought that a phone would give at least some measure of 3's signal strength in the areas of interest (even though phone calls themselves are of no direct relevance).

The 3 modem works on 3.5g so you would need a phone that is HSDPA compatable but I think the PAYG Sim is 3g only!
