Does that mean that pensions before April 2016 were paid in advance?

Please note though, as a very minor issue, that deferred state pensions are not necessarily paid on the day indicated by their NI No. (Or weren't before the 2016 changes).

You could choose weekly in advance.

Thanks .... but when pensions are paid four weekly directly after your state retirement age isn't that payment an advance payment?

The new State Pension is usually paid every 4 weeks into an
account of your choice. You're paid in arrears (for the last 4
weeks, not the coming 4 weeks).

    Thanks.

We were talking about the old scheme. My understanding was that pyments were made directly after you reach state retiremtent age. Are you saying that the earliest is/was four weeks after state retirement age if paid four weekly?

Above re basic state pension (old scheme).

The basic State Pension is usually paid every 4 weeks into an account of your choice. You're paid in arrears which means you're paid for the last 4 weeks, not for the coming 4 weeks.

    Thanks,

I'm sorry if you think me dumb, but your reply wasn't clear.

    Let me try again.
Your first payment is made at the end of the first full week after you reach State Pension age.

If you are paid four weeks pension a week after you qualified for state pension, doesn't that imply you were paid for the three weeks before your state pension was due? If not then you must be being paid for the week since tour state pension age and for three weeks in advance? No?

If you try inserting "for the one week" after "your first payment" then you will see.

Between DWP & HMRC they seem to have made the whole thing a little complicated because you are taxed as of the date you should have received it if you were paid it weekly.
