tesco machines

I just used my credit card to pay for my ''scan as you shop'' items, I put my card in followed the instructions, I was waiting for my receipt, it didn't print... I called for assistance, she said I hadn't paid, I said I had but it was clear on screen that I hadn't so I paid using my card again. I got a receipt this time
I wasn't happy.
I called my bank when I got home, i'd paid 3 times, 1 and 2 I understood but 3?
they said I needed to sort it out with Tesco, I called Tesco , they said wait for 24 hours we'll look at it and make a decision , the evidence suggested I couldn't have bought 3 identical shops in so quick succession surely.
I got refunded the 2 extra payments.
i'm left feeling quite vulnerable, i knew i had paid the first time but i had no leg to stand on in the shops had i..... what could i have done in the shop without the receipt?

I very much doubt you "paid" 3 times as it is unlikely the machine would allow it. It may have requested the money from the bank and for one of a million reasons the transaction failed and the money was held as pending waiting for it to be claimed later in the same way as a successful transaction. All the bank would see would be 3 transactions and the average bank CS would not have a clue about how it works. Don't spend that refunded money as there is a good chance it will be debited later when the pending transactions drop off.

Well stop falling for Tesco's job destroying initiatives then. Use a checkout like everyone else.

Not everyone else, I very rarely use anything other than the self scans in supermarkets these days because of the huge queues at checkouts.
  • I can't remember last time I saw a "huge" queue at any supermarket.

You obviously don't shop at the same Sainsburys that I do then :).

Scan as you shop is *very* convenient for the customer. Why do I want to load my shopping into a trolley, unload it at the checkout, load it again, just to unload it again at the car? It's much easier to bag things as you go round the shop. You also get a running sub-total as you go round the shop.

    It probably didn't clear,

I have a business that processes card through worldpay. It's super strict and wants the cardholder to enter their billing address which must match EXACTLY as the card issuer has it on file.

A lot of declines happen. They attempt up to 3 times and it goes through.

Then we get a call. You've taken OUR PAYMENT 3 TIMES!!! We check our records, clearly not 2 declines and goes through the third.

Well this is how cards work. A soon as the card number and initial data are provided they get sent to the bank immediately to put a hold on the balance. Then it confirms the transaction by means of pin/3d secure/additional checks.

it puts a hold of the transaction whether or not it is authorised. Funds held on failed/declined transactions eventually get released - but some banks can hold this data for a while.

On most consumer credit/debit cards, you wont see all these pending holds on the online banking. But on a corporate card all the data is provided and it is quite confusing to follow.

Also while your at it make sure you don't ever send an email as your "destroying" jobs at royal mail by the decline in letters. Actually don't use any kind of computer device due to all those lost jobs where people used to use typewriters to create documents and file and process them manually.

Shops do love putting a lot of trust on their customers. I wonder how much stock they lose from buyers *accidently* putting things in baskets without scanning.
  • Would be really surprised if all 3 had went through! However, the self-scan machines can really be more hassle than their worth. Tesco's especially!
