hi foxgloves
Tomato and ale chutney sounds amazing! My neighbour grows tomatoes and does share them with me so i should investigate something like that rather than just eating them whole
Agree re the gas/elec prices. At the moment it seems unreal that we might actually be cold one day but it'll come ... I bought another HWB a few weeks ago and a blanket as I don't intend to switch on my heating unless it's absolutely necessary. I can be wasteful with electricity as i switch on my oven for one jacket potato - not any more! I will be bulk baking /cooking as much as I can; at the weekend I made butternut squash soup (using a cook book from the library) and it was lovely - DD2 ate it all so i only got a little taste! I like to roast the BNS first so I'll be roasting as much as i can fit in my oven and making as much soup for the freezer as possible, before the October price rises.
I've done a couple of PA surveys today and just cashed out another £50 (i use my survey money to overpay my mortgage.

The beauty contest just seems more farcical since it is pandering to the people in the party and not to the general public. It just highlights how out of touch they really are with reality. I enjoyed the results of a survey that showed the vast majority of people didn’t want a tax cut and would prefer the money be ploughed into public services..2025 decluttering: 3,993🌟🥉🌟💐🏅🏅🌟🥈🏅🌟🏅💐💎🌟🏅🏆🌟🏅

Well done with the steps, that’s an amazing result. I’m hoping to get more active when the heat is out of the summer. Enjoying our home grown tomatoes at the moment too.4

Well done on your steps 🥳 Don’t forget I do so many steps because I don’t have a car and rarely use public transport so walk to/from work and several other places. Plus I’ve got a dog. I’ve always been a keen walker though, even as a child I would walk miles. I was very popular with parents in the school holidays as I would supervise a posse of local children and we would set off through the fields in the morning with a picnic and not return until late afternoon having walked miles, depositing very tired children at their parents door 😆I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)6

Tomato and ale chutney sounds wonderful. It did set me wondering though when so many of us are trying to save money why there isn't a debt free grocery challenge? I've seen some lovely recipes and hints both on this diary and some others. I know there's an old style grocery challenge but the debt free way isn't necessarily old style....It's scary how prices are increasing.6

I am dreading the winter. Not so much this one as our prices are fixed until October next year but then it will be a nightmare as mr LH really feels the cold. Even now he is wearing a jumper or coat when out with the dog at 10pm. I am still in shirt sleeves. I can see him sitting with his coat on and still being cold. Tax and NI cuts wont help us as between us we pay about £7 a month tax and as we are retired no NI. Hopefully whichever candidate ( I am being polite) wins I just hope they keep to the comittment to up pensions by the Sept inflation rate even though that will be eaten up before April when we get it. For anyone who doesnt know the full pension is £185 per week or £9568 pa. There is pension credit for people who have no other pension but even with a small private pension that could easily take you over getting it. I would also add that the basic pension for men born before April 1951 and women before April 1953 the rate is on 141.85 pw. Hardly riches.

@ladyholly I really feel the cold and a heated throw saved me last winter. It kept me comfortable when everyone else was warm enough but I would have been really cold. It cost me about £35 on the big river site.3

I thought of a heated throw for him but electricity and dog claws are probably not a good mix.

I’ve reached the end of your diary - thanks for all the inspiration Foxgloves. Loving the cooking, gardening and tips on frugality.
These are indeed worrying times and anything thing we can do to help ourselves is certainly a bonus.January spends - £587.586
