Oh I can't get on with recipes in 'cups' at all! If I find something only in 'cups', I just make something else. At school, we learned recipes in both imperial & metric measures. I tend to use mostly metric now, but some of my old recipes are only in imperial & I'm fine with that. I can do either...................................but not cups! At school, we were also taught shortcuts like 1 rounded tbsp of caster sugar = 1 ounce and 1 heaped tbsp flour = 1oz, so I don't always bother weighing those, unless it's for the sort of cake which would go weird if the flour was a bit out.

Hello my little St Valentines Frugalistas,
Hope you are all having as good a day as possible given Lockdown, etc. We have (as usual) had a low key but enjoyable Valentine's Day. We don't do presents, but Mr F likes to buy me some flowers, so since the LBM, I always say tulips, as I prefer them to roses anyway & I can't bear the rip-off prices! So I have some pretty tulips in a vintage Denby vase which belonged to my Mum & they look nice & cheery. We do buy each other cards, just not the massively expensive presents suggested by retailers!
I've baked Mr F a semolina cake, filled with lovely strawberry jam made by my friend who has a very productive allotment. He's cooking a nice meal (I have just nearly fainted upon the floor, as he came in to inform me that he has bought too much steak & is PUTTING HALF OF IT IN THE FREEZER FOR ANOTHER DAY!!! - Oh my days, he generally has the appetite of a starved ox, he must have filled up on cake, lol!) We wrote 'Prosecco' on the shopping list, then crossed it off, as we realised we have a bottle of rose cava in the pantry leftover from Christmas. Shopped from home- money saving at its best!
We've lined up some viewing for later & I shall light the stove & some candles. I don't regret not spending silly money. The only thing we'd have done differently if we weren't in Lockdown is to have gone out to one of our favourite places for a walk & cappucinos & cake in the coffee shop.
Nothing exciting to share with you. I actually think that if I were to strip off, put a saucepan on my head & run up & down the street shouting 'I love goblins', not a single person would even notice, as it has been so quiet here all day. However, before anyone suggests it, I am not planning to put this to the test. I would probably get the saucepan stuck......or worse still, there'd be some bloke down the road I don't know about who thinks he actually IS a goblin!! Saucepans.....goblins..... I think I'm losing it already & the bloody cava isn't even open yet!
Cheers m'dears,
F xx

Well I hope you’re not running up the street stark naked shouting I love goblins with a saucepan on your head. We don’t want you reporting from a home for the bewildered 🤣🤣I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)9

foxgloves said:Morning all,
Just hopping on while my semolina cake is in the oven to post the recipe for CLF, as promised:
SEMOLINA CAKE
4oz semolina
4oz self raising flour
4oz butter
4oz caster sugar
1egg, beaten
1tsp almond extract
About 5tbsp raspberry jam (or whatever you fancy, blackberry works well)
Pre-heat oven to Gas 4. Grease & base line a standard sandwich tin. Sift flour into bowl, stir in semolina & rub in butter till mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in caster sugar. Add the beaten egg & almond extract & mix until you have a firm dough. If you have used a smallish egg, you may need a splash of milk but only a tiny one as the dough should be much more like biscuit dough than cake batter.
Divide in two & press half of it over the base of the tin. Spread with the jam. Carefully press over the remaining dough any way that works for you, to cover the jam. Bake for 30-35 mins at Gas 4. Remove & leave to cool in tin sufficiently long enough to be able to turn it out. Cut into wedges & sift witj icing sugar before serving warm.
This is quite an old recipe - can't recall where it came from, but I only have it in Imperial measurements which is unusual for me. It is a very simple cake, lovely warm with coffee. It wouldn't win any beauty contests, it's not that kind of cake, but it does the job.... & a snowy sifting of icing sugar works wonders!
