OBL - I wish I had your tungsten teeth. Mine have always chipped & cracked & just enjoyed their own unhelpful trajectory of destruction. My dislike of dental treatment began when I was a little girl about 5. I needed a tooth filled & was so terrified when the dentist came at me with the rubber gas mask thingy that I fought him off. My Dad was instructed to hold me down but I kept fighting so more dentists were fetched to to assist with pinning me to the chair. Of course I was even more terrified, fought harder & in the end, the dentist managed only to get some sort of temporary dressing onto the tooth. My Dad didn't speak to me the whole drive home as he said I'd been silly & made such a show of him. Funnily enough, when we spoke of this incident decades later, my Dad said of that particular dentist "Oh, him!! He was known as the 'Butcher of -------', he was". Bloody hell, not surprising that I was so scared, was it then Dad, I said!!!!

I’m ok with dentists now but had a really bad experience with one, also known as the Butcher of .... He used to stink of whiskey, I’m sure he was half cut most of the time. Then another dentist I went to caused me to get an infection in my gum and my face swelled up alarmingly. That dentist was later jailed for murdering his boyfriend. Had great dentists ever since thankfully 😅I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)11

SunAddict - Yes, I have a really good one now, too. I reckon it must say 'Nervous patient' sonewhere in my notes, because he always explains everything really well & says he is phobic about having injections. That makes me feel less wimpy.

Well done for going to the dentist. I'm mainly ok with the dentist but I had root canal treatment a few years ago - I've never experienced anything like it. Honestly felt like whatever instrument he was brandishing was going up through my mouth, through my eye and thence into my brain.Good plan to save as much as you can to put you in the best position for a future move.8

Blackcats - Ouch to horrid root canal work. Yes, agree re the savings plan. I think it's the only way to facilitate future choices, so I am really going to stick at it this year.

So many of us with bad dental experiences. I'm another one that had a rotten dentist as a child - always makes me thing of Little Shop of Horrors.

Just delurking to say I live near the sea, I’m near Margate. There are pockets of posh places and less nice. I love living near the sea, it’s always different. You can rent a beach but too. I don’t think you need it selling to you.

CCL - Yes, I read your diary post about childhood dentist trauma. I think these things stay with us for a long time. I also broke my front tooth at primary school, playing kiss chase. I tripped over & banged my mouth on a drain in the playground. That wasn't my scary rubber gasmask experience though.
Carolbee - I have always wanted to live by the sea. Mum & Dad had grown up on the coast so it was nothing to them, but I think if you've lived inland your whole life as I have, while also loving the seaside so much, it is amazing to think we might actually manage to move there at some point. Thanks for your nice comment about reading my diary. Glad to be even vaguely entertaining in these fraught times.
OBL - Luckily my wisdom teeth have never been any trouble. I know they can be difficult to remove though. My friend had to have hers extracted in hospital & she later realised she had a handprint shaped bruise in the middle of her chest where the surgeon had braced down hard while trying to yank them out!

Hello Icicles,
Oh my, what a cold day. Not as cold as the Scottish highlands, I know, but it's a long time since we woke up to minus 4 & Mr F texted to say that it was minus 6 by the time he got to work, which is about 25 miles further north. But looking on the bright side, it was the kind of winter day I actually like. Yes, it was brass monkeys, but it was also dry, bright & sunny. I told myself it would be way too icy to go out for a walk. Two minutes later, I'd had stern words with myself for being such a wimp & was lacing my hiking boots up. Didn't have a long walk, as I needed to get back to skype my sis at our agreed time, so just did 5000 steps or so. I did have to be careful not to slip, but even just walking up by the side of the horses, going to see if the flood water had gone & a trot around our local village streets felt like it had been some beneficial fresh air & exercise. My fitness levels have dropped considerably since last Spring, although I know throwing myself into the gardening season (our garden is quite big) will be good exercise again, as it is every year. No chance today though, as it is still covered with snow.
Have devoted most of today to pursuing various leisure activities, none of which have involved spending a single bean. On the domestic front, I have made a sourdough loaf, which is currently in the oven & I will shortly be making the giant baked beans recipe from the 'Pinch of Nom' book. It is incredibly simple & uses butter beans. It also makes 4 portions, so before Mr F can start fancying seconds, I'm going to divvy it up & use the spare portions as our lunch tomorrow. I'll be at home, but it will also be good for packed lunch in one of the Beloved's collection of microwaveable mugs.
I wish I had something fabulously interesting to tell you all, but I don't, so I shall wish you all a cosy evening, sign off my laptop & go & see if these nice bready smells wafting up the stairs mean that my loaf is nearly ready.
Take care all,
