BaileysBabe - I like to have a breadcrumbs bag in the freezer too. So useful for making stuffing, lentil loaf or crunchy toppings on cauliflower cheese, etc.
Yes, you're right that the annoying things are those which seem fine one day, but have blue fur the next. Of course those have to be thrown on the compost. If I think I won't use a couple of lemons, I'll often squeeze them & freeze the juice. It's surprising how often that's turned out to be useful when I've needed it for a recipe, or jazzed up some buns with a bit of lemon drizzle or made a hot honey, lemon & ginger drink for a sore throat. Ditto limes, as the juice comes in useful in various recipes & makes nice salsa with fresh tomatoes, spring onions & coriander, etc.
Cucumbers are the other culprit. I checked our fridge recently & decided we didn't need cucumber because we'd still got half a one which was perfectly fine. Two days later, I went to use it & my fingers went right through a load of slimy green mush! I think we'll all have the occasional problem with certain fresh produce. It's seeing these TV programmes where families are routinely throwing away perfectly good bread, bags of apples, etc, which makes me mad because it's so ignorant & complacent. All that stuff is useable & you don't need to have won 'Masterchef' to do it, you just need a bit of knowledge, common sense & to make a modicum of effort, don't you?
Food waste really does seem to wind me up!

I to freeze the juice of lemons/ oranges/ limes, I also freeze the zest, it is surprising how many recipes benefit from the addition of zest, risottos, fishcakes, cantucci, cheesecake, various cakes. Occasionally instead I thickly slice the fruit before freezing as it makes a good addition to many drinks, Pims, gin and tonic, or just water.
We have a drawer in our freezer where we keep all these little bits, bread crumbs, fruit juices, zests, grated cheese, excess buttercream, HM stock cubes, last rasher or 2 of raw bacon chopped. Which makes it quicker to find them when your cooking.Fashion on a ration 2025 0/66 coupons spent

I used to be quite wasteful with food in the olden days - I'm pleased I didn't see that because it would have made me sick.
I'm going to be making a bread and butter pudding today to use up some bread that we don't have space for in the freezer. I do love it though so any excuse.

BaileysBabe - Oooh, freezing zest is a good idea. Thanks for that. I shall be doing that in future.
CCL - I like bread & butter pudding. I also like bread pudding - the one that comes out like more of a fruity tray bake cake. I always use the old Cranks book recipe for that. It was my Dad's favourite. I used to make it for him often & must have used up heaps of stale bread, rolls, etc, over the years. I even added some crumbled leftover Christmas pudding to one of them.... he just thought I'd put extra fruit in.
Funnily enough, re that news story showing the wheelie bin with all the unopened discarded food....... that bunch of perfect bananas was the first thing I thought about this morning when I got up!! I think I sometimes just have to let these things go!

Lol, BaileysBabe - I got stuck into some gardening this afternoon, which expunged the mental image of those bananas so I'm OK about them now. However, if I can't get any this week either, I may have a bit of resurgent banana envy.
