Meter Reading responsible?

Who responsibility is it to read the meter? The supplier or the customer?

Over the years this has changed from the supplier doing regular readings to the customer being asked to do them?

Does anyone know the law or regulations on meter reading?

Cheers
Chris.

It's down to OFGEM rules. They require meters to be read every two years. If you don't want estimated bills, you can read it yourself.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

There are many threads on this Forum where people have had unexpected large bills due to lack of meter readings, errors in reading, meter errors.

Regardless of whose duty it is to read meters it is to your benefit to read your meters at least monthly, give them to your supplier and when you get your bills online or by mail read them and understand them.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

as well as doing what Robin suggest you should also get them corrected if they are wrong or based on estimates. Never accept an estimated bill

It's always a good idea to save your bills & readings so that you've got evidence if something goes wrong - see here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5801688 and here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5801971 and there are hundreds more threads with the same problem - bills haven't been checked or meters havent been read and ginormous bills have accrued.

All of which can be avoided by spending five minutes a month, reading your meter, sending the info into your supplier and then checking your bills or online statements
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

That depends on how good the estimates are. At one point a few years back, I didn't bother submitting readings because the electricity company had got so good at estimating my bill.

  • Our SSE electric only meter is read every 3 months by them, about half way through each quarter I put my own reading in as well.
