I laugh at most of the ones I see too, even in rural Devon where at least we have the excuse of no mains gas. If we had gas, we'd fit a gas-coal stove and it would fool most of the people most of the time, like our last one did.
But logs are 'free' here, and last night when it hit -5c we were snug all night, with nothing but the stove.
That's exactly what I'm hoping to do, I guess I don't have the romance for a newer house with a stove, Ours is necessity as our only heating, we cut and season our own wood, it's dirty business and hard graft. You get some stunning gas/ electric looking stoves why anyone would want the cost or housekeeping with a burner if they have mains central heating must be bonkers0 -
I've thought of another - fake grass!
Pleased to say the house we are buying is none of these, though it does have a woodburner but thats to support an oil heating system there is a small wood area so we will have our own wood!0 -
And if it's warm enough to open them, it's warm enough for flies! :rotfl:
It's just struck me that I don't recall seeing any flies here.
Daddy longlegs - darn it. Ants and flying ants - double darn it. But no flies....
You guessed it - I've virtually decided to knock out a window and replace it with a set of modern bifold doors at some point:rotfl:0 -
Quite a lot of people round our way are extending into side returns. It does tend to result in one room without direct sunlight. My husband has his heart set on doing this to ours, which seems a lot of money for not that much more space. Having seen some pics, people *have* done some nice things with them, but I just can't be bothered, I'd rather reduce our mortage with that kind of money.
I've told him that if he comes into the money to do it, and can sort it all out himself, he's welcome to it. This is my cunning plan because he will never actually get around to doing it0 -
I would like to have a wood burner. Just to burn it once in a while. Maybe 2-3 times a year.
I like the warmth of the real fire. Is not the most important thing in a house but I like them when their design goes with the house.
Fake grass is a big No No for me. Don't like it at all!
Bifold doors - I like all the light coming in but don't like the flies. My friend will install windows with thin aluminium frame instead. Looks good but not really energy efficient.0 -

Considering an install cost of around £3k, that's quite a luxury item. And considering that many woodburner manufacturers make a gas model identical to the 'real;' thing, why limit yourself?0 -

Davesnave, we got one for free. Is a present from friend that didn't want it in his brand new house.
We plan to install it in ours as we both kind of like the idea.0 -
One tip about the flies and wide doors:
If Velux or similar roof vents are installed and opened, most flying insects will find their way out of these, as their instinct is to go upwards.
In our large polytunnel there are no roof vents, of course, so flies that come in rarely get out again, except in the beaks of sparrows which come in to collect them from the underside of the plastic. Easy pickings!
No squirrels or chipmunks so far.....0
