The issue is that some vehicles are capable of going so far over the speed limit that they are limited, at 155mph or thereabouts. That is quite simply far too high.0

They are not limited to 155 because they can go "so far over the speed limit they have to be limited". They are limited to 155 because the German manufacturers have a gentlemans agremment between them to never produce a car that can exceed 155mph
Just like Japanese motorbike manufacturers limit their bikes (or used to at least) to 299kph and Japanese car manufacturers had a gentlemans agreement to never produce a car in excess of 276bhp. Hence all the older Mitsubishi Evo's, Subaru, Toyota Supras, etc had exactly 276bhp in their advertising. Reality is these cars did produce more, but due to the gentlmans agreement they were always sold as having 276bhp.
Also, who's to say 155 is too high? I've done over 150mph on a motorbike on track in the freezing cold and lashing down with rain. Could hardly make out my braking & turn in markers on track, but nothing bad happened to me.
Just because YOU think it's "too fast", does not make it so. Some people think 200mph isn't fast enough and if they can do these speeds in a legal environment then who are you, me or anyone else to tell them not to do so.
Before you come back and say "but it's sold as a road car and therefore still should not be able to reach those speeds if sold as such"....well my motorbike used to be a road bike, and just because something has the capability of doing 155mph on the M6, doesn't mean that is what it should be used for. People need to take responsibility for their own actions and quit thinking the government should protect them from everything and making decisions for them. If you can't own a car capable of those speeds and take full responsibility when you break the law, then you shouldn't be allowed on the roads. It's about time people get over this whole "oh, it's not my fault, they shouldn't have sold it if it can do things that are not legal in public places" attitude because that's the exact attitude which is putting this country into the gutter.

in 22 years of driving, I've never had the need, nor authority, to drive faster than 70mph. So why are all cars sold in the UK capable of going the speeds they can? Apparently my car is limited... to 155mph. Madness!
Why aren't cars sold here automatically limited to, for example, 77mph. If you want to have the limiter deactivated, sign a consent form and have it switched off.The issue is that some vehicles are capable of going so far over the speed limit that they are limited, at 155mph or thereabouts. That is quite simply far too high.
And as above, your reasons for even that limit are wrong.
My car is an Audi, it is listed with a top speed of 198mph.0 -
It's about time they introduced average speed checks on all motorways and major A roads. Easy to do these days - they do it in roadworks now.
That should satisfy everyone - both those who want limiters, and those who claim the only reason they want a fast car is for track days or driving in Germany.0 -
In Germany, they have a two pronged procedure for safety. They not only have speed cameras (and the majority of Autobahn is regulated to 120/130kph) but they also have cameras that enforce a minimum distance between vehicles. I think it is time they increased the speed limit to 80mph, but at the same time specified a minimum distance. After all, to quote Clarkson, speeding doesn't kill, stopping very quickly does...0
