I am thinking........ If I remove MaAfee then allow Microsoft to kick in, it might solve it. If not as the price for malwarebytes, 49.99 per yr...

Look carefully at the Malwarebytes website and you'll see that £49.99 is actually for 3 devices. For a single PC, it's £29.99.

It's a bit sneaky. I'm sure a lot of people inadvertently buy 3 licences instead of 1.

But it's great software, though. The latest version is the first security software I've ever paid for. I use it instead of a live antivirus.

I need to understand something. If this Defender thing is said to be all I need and that is built in, why would I need anything else? , yes I know I had McAfee, but I took that as a gift, not knowing that Defender would do the same. Also, why pay for something when there are free options, i.e. AVG free ?. The thing is, it seems malwarebytes, is pretty popular so must be good. Question is, Don't know what to do.

    There is no simple answer.

Generally, I would say that there is no need to pay for security software. Install a free antivirus (I recommend Avast), free Malwarebytes, and have some kind of domain blacklisting in your web browsers, and keep all your software up-to-date, and you should be pretty-well protected.

The ONLY reason I paid for Malwarebytes Premium is because it doesn't seem to impact my PC's performance, whilst live-scanning antiviruses do. Although I like Avast's capabilities of cleaning up infections, the live shields really slow down my PC, so I disabled them and just run manual scans now.

Oh -- also, a lot of antiviruses bundle all sorts of "extras" into the paid-for subscription. A lot of them aren't that useful. In fact... a lot of the extras bundled into the free versions of antiviruses aren't that useful. :-/

Yeah, I'm not really understanding your dilemma?

Run with Defender as your anti-virus, or any of the free third party ones (I use Bitdefender), and keep the free version of Malwarebytes for occasional scans. It sometimes picks up stuff that an anti-virus will miss.

You shouldn't run more than one real time anti-virus program at a time, but you can have any number of on-demand malware scanners installed.

Ok, I'm sure I have it now. I will keep malwarebytes and if and when it says I must pay (remember I clicked on try the 30 day version free, ) I will sort it out then. Have to say, the motivation behind my original post, to find out why the pop-up notifying me that the firewall needed switching on, appears to have gone, so it does seem there was a conflict between Defender and McAfee. Thanks for your time everyone.

  • I also clicked on the 30-day free version.
  • It doesn't seem to work

I am sure I clicked on the green free, rather than the blue free. They might be the same though. If you click on pricing, there is a download button under the free version. If I experience issues later and have to remove it, that's the one I will click next time.

imo defender is all you need these days. the way i look at it is microsoft know their software better than anyone else and is best placed to protect it. i also don't like how programs like malewarebytes try to trick/scare you into paying.

before defender/security essentials came along i never bothered with av as it used to slow my pc down. apart from when i downloaded some software and didn't uncheck the chromium virus (20 min reset to fix) i haven't had any other problems to date. av is totally overrated and should just be part of the os (not 3rd party) working anonymously in the background
