Windows Firewall pop-up

Options
Every time I boot my HP laptop up, a sound and box appears, saying "Turn on windows firewall etc", yet having been into settings, as far as I am concerned, it is on. Idea's please?.

Have you scanned for a malware infection ?

Try malware bytes , do a full scan

Some infections disable antivirus and firewalls

I am doing it now, but note I have a 14 day free version then they require money. Already I have McAfee which is a paid for version, linked from my son-in-laws account. So Im asking myself, why isn't McAfee taking care of it?.

  • perhaps McAfee is acting as a replacement firewall ?

So, after following the advice to run Malwarebytes, I did and it found 40 items for quarantine which it did. I allowed it to re-start, then for luck, I did a re-start. The pop-up ref firewall, hasn't appeared. DAMN, as I typed, it appeared. If I could have moved quicker, I would have done a screen grab or used snipping tool.

So, this will be interesting to see what you suggest. It has to be said, although I said the firewall was active, it took me ages to find it, so now I have doubt if I did it correctly.

Maybe if someone would provide an idiot proof route, we could confirm either way please.

  • McAfee is clearly not working , and may (I dont know) have a built in firewall that is disabling the default windows one

how about removing McAfee and reverting to microsoft AV and firewall?

Oh, I will have a think about that. Clearly to have McAfee at £80 plus from son-in-law, was welcome, if I remove it and then the problem remains, I will have lost that "gift" and be using the free 30 day Malwarebytes and then need to pay whatever it is for that?.

  • £80 or not "following the advice to run Malwarebytes, I did and it found 40 items for quarantine which it did."

    but its not working!

I would have thought you would have had a serial number for the prog in order to reinstall after a rebuild due to viruses

PS the malware bytes is IN ADDITION to microsoft AV , I just run it once a weerk/mth and set i not to start on bootup

    .
I am thinking........ If I remove MaAfee then allow Microsoft to kick in, it might solve it. If not as the price for malwarebytes, 49.99 per yr, I could do that, and hopefully IT would take care of the firewall pop-up/notification.

  • don't pay for anything. you don't need to. If mcafee paid me £80 i still wouldn't have it on any of my devices.

if it was my laptop i would completely uninstall mcafee (may need uninstall tool from mcafee) and revert to microsoft defender and firewall. run the free version of malewarebytes if you still need to.
