There's a link in the Indexed Collections >> Organic Foods >> Chickens and Eggs that shows you how eggs float when old and how they look when cracked onto a plate at various ages.

But of course fresh eggs taste better and cook better. The yolks go all runny after a while.
Delia's view (for what it's worth)
More importantly, how can you still have eggs after five months? Unless you bought a gigantic box full months ago, but that really would be false economy seeing as how you still haven't used them.
I can understand maybe buying too many eggs and having them for maybe five weeks after you bought them, but not 5 months!student100 hasn't been a student since 2007...0 -
Well if you think 5 months out of date is bad, how about 16 years? There was a radio discussion the other week asking what was the oldest food anybody had in their fridge/freezer/kitchen and I was going to ring up and tell them about my easter eggs that were a year out of date. Somebody rang up and said that he had purchased 12 christmas puddings 16 years ago because they had all been really reduced in the shop and he still had 5 of them left. He had eaten one just last christmas. Obviously still alive to tell the tale
and said they tasted fine ewwwwwwwww!
What is the oldest food in your house - and by that I don't mean you have to beat 16 years!0 -
Just as well - I can't beat 16 year old food - but clearing out my cupboards this week found a selection of spices in a plastic tupperware box (tamarind, tumeric, mustard seeds etc) that I bought in an indian shop 5 years ago and only used on a couple of occasions, then forgot about them. They came with me from my previous house and have only been rediscovered because I am having a new kitchen fitted soon and need to clear all the cupboards. Needless to say I am not brave enough to use them and have thrown them away - what a waste :eek:0

Not my house, but a tale of woe and old food in my dearly departed Grandma's house.
In 1990 my gran had a fall and developed septicemia and it was thought she wouldn't pull through. My aunt duly arrived from Canada, gran pulled through so my mum and aunt decided to clean Grandma's house whilst she was still in hospital. G'ma liked to have food in, for when guests came unexpectedly, even though she was many years past entertaining. When the kitchen cupboards, which were crammed to the gunnels, were emptied, they found packets of dried crumble mixes, cake mixes etc (and I'm talking bags larger than a big bag of flour) with price labels on - PRE-DECIMAL!! That made them at least 18 years old and some probably much older. She had even brought them with her when she moved house in the late 70's. Needless to say, much food was wasted as cupboards were emptied and the few remaining bags they left, even though out of date would never have been used, they pulled to the front of the top cupboards so they still looked full. She died in 1997 none the wiser and the food was still there, so add another 7 years on.:)
As for me, I'm not telling ya, so if you come for tea, you'll never know.:D0 -

Hehe... a few years ago my brother and I were set a challenge in our grandma's house...it started with us discovering a packet or something a few months out of date, then to keep us entertained she got us to raid every cupboard and clear out all the way-out-of-date stuff. Think the oldest thing was probably only 5 or 10 years though.
I'm sure half the things in Mum's spice rack are more than a few years out of date, they seem to be fine though (although the fact they're that old is indicative of the fact they're rarely used).
As a related aside, we were recently clearing out some very old First Aid things that we found lurking in boxes in cupboards in our Student Union... apart from the usual dressings and things a year or two out of date we found some dressings in boxes that were printed something like "complies with the First Aid in Factories Act 1973" or something... and some very old Tampax (on the box there was a red star boasting something like "NO BELTS, NO CLIPS, NO PINS" required) :eek:student100 hasn't been a student since 2007...0
