I had a clearout last year so I know I don't have any old stuff now.
In fact I've just looked through the cupboards and I think the oldest are a couple of tins of curry sauce with a best before date of Jan 1997. So I've nothing to worry about.)
If it’s not important to you, don’t consume it0 -

When we moved 3 years ago I cleared out the larder and chucked away some of Mr TM's herbs and spices that pre-dated me
He won't believe that they deteriorate, so best thing is to chuck 'em before he sees. I think there are a few herbs/spices well past their best before date, but I won't use them. I'm a bit careful of crackers etc after seeing a prog about the bugs that live on them.
Also, I ALWAYS check my flour carefully before using it. Where do those little bugs come from. I've stopped buying value flour as I find that the bugs are there long before the best before date. That's indicative to me of how old the flour is, compared to some of the 'better' brands. I'll pay a bit more for no weevils, thanks0 -
When I was a youngster we didn't have a fridge, we had a 'slab' in the pantry and no sell-by dates. If it looked alright you smelled it, if it smelled alright you tasted it, if it tasted alright you ate it.
Survived and still going strong!Cheers

Looking at the voting around 90% of us do eat out of date food so I would summarise by saying that the date is really there as just a guideline ........
thanks a lot for all your votes :T:whistle:Make Hay While The Sun Shines:think:1 -
Nearly chopped off hubby's fingers earlier in the year, as caught him about to throw out a whole load of my spices which were "out of date". If it was still original contents yep, but I refill all my little jars regularly with herbs and spices from my local health food store, so much cheaper than shop bought refill packets. He didn't half get an ear-bashing, especially as he normally takes no interest in the kitchen cupboards, only what comes out of them and onto a plate!1

yes i would and i do. Can't understand the paranoia about dates. My chickens lay eggs with no date stamp on them - inconsiderate eh? same with my homemade pickle which is at its best after 2 years! LOL
got some baby corn from the market - loose not in a packet therefore no date on it. Theres still some in the fridge and its fine. People need to relearn about food, obviously if meat looks wrong, or smells bad, or if fruit and veg is mouldy or too squishy then it is past its best. I have a friend whose hubby won't eat anything unless it has a date on it! None of my hen's eggs for him then;)Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

When I find things that are out of date I tend to chuck them but around a month ago I did drink about 12 cans of cider (over a period of 2 weeks!) that were between 6 and 16 months out of date and it tasted all right.
But I do have a question about readymade meals (I know!). My dad got 2 chicken tikkas in the freezer that has a best before date of 6 May and on the packet it says use within 1 month of the BB date which takes it up to 6 June. The question is should we eat it in the next day or so or bin it?
ThanksWaddle you do eh?1 -
If it's frozen and keeps for a month I'm sure it will keep for a couple of weeks longerstudent100 hasn't been a student since 2007...0
