Cheese we cut the mould off nobody knows any difference :o .......
bread we look for the mould usually ok for few days past its date......

As certain strains of cheese have mould in them anway not a problem.

But I was told by someone who was chemist that if bread has mould on it you should chuck it as it has mould spores all the way through it.

Can't tell you if that is true. But I keep my bread in the fridge.

As has been said before it is about common sense.

As far as I know it's true. There are threads running deeply through the food item and the mould you see at the top is merely the tip of the iceberg. Like you, I keep bread in the fridge.

Before the demise of Safeway supermarkets, we regularly used to eat out of date penguin biscuits and Walkers crisps..........bought lots when they were offer

Got a stack of Penguins, BB April 05 in the fridge, perfectly fine! Good offer too at Christmas IIRC from ASDA, triple packs (one ordinary, one mint, one orange), and BOGOF, sothey were only about £2 for 54 Penguins!

I bought weetabix from the little local shop and ate one before finding out it was A YEAR out of date:eek:

Hope you took the remaining Weetabix back to the shop for a refund too!

We buy a lot of Richmond Sausages which are stuck straight into the freezer when home, (bought in bulk when on offer!), but as the date is based on them only being in a fridge, we end up eating them sometimes six months after the date! No noticeable difference at all. Some foods though such as beefburgers do tend to dehydrate a bit if they've been in the freezer too long and won't cook as properly.

    Cheers

I'm with the "depends what it is and what it looks/smells like" brigade. Can't be doing with wasting food because the company or supermarket has put a date on it, if it is obviously still good. Agree with the seafood and chicken being dodgier though.

ps did anyone just hear Martin singing "Summer Holiday" on Jeremy Vine just now ? Don't give up the day job, luv :D

I might use them if they where about week over date. But not 5 months out of date.

I don't think my Mum knew there was such a thing as a best before date on eggs when we were growing up....she always broke them into a cup (just incase they smelt off) and then used them......

what amazes me with eggs....is where does the egg go???? as an egg ages it disappears....

How would you know when an egg would go off, when it comes straight from the chicken....it doesn't come pre-date stamped.....

Not sure I'd be brave enough to eat an egg *that* far out of date but I always rely on the old fashioned method.

I put it in a cup of water, if it sinks, it's OK, if it floats it's bad. I use this everytime and pay no attention to the use by dates on eggs.
