Thanks for the replies. Yes, Royal Mail seem to have a policy of directing business customers to 0845. So much so that any number you find on sites such as SayNoto0870 are either dead or telling you that you've called the wrong number. Try any of the 0345 numbers and they will ask if you're a business customer - and tell you to call the 0845.

    Replacing 0845 with 0345 doesn't work.

Now even if it is legal to use 0845 you must state the call cost next to the number. Anyway, I'm just going to call it and save the aggravation.

    It's just 5p a minute if it's this number here (08457 950 950):

Plus your telephone provider's access charge - calculated on a per minute basis.

Surely an access charge is a one off cost? Also is this charged on both landlines and mobiles or just mobiles?

    Unfortunately it is per minute.

Both landlines and mobiles. The exact amount per minute will depend on your telephone service provider. As an example here are the relevant charges for EE:

If you are on a calling plan which has inclusive calls to 0845/0870 numbers then these charges are irrelevant.

As far as I know the only calling plan which does not levy an access charge for such numbers is the BT Basic plan which is restricted to certain people on a low income.

The Service Charge is 5p per minute. This is the charge levied by the called party for providing a premium service. The rate varies depending on the number called, specifically on the next six digits after the leading zero.

Service Charges can be looked up at: http://checkit.uboss.com/

The Access Charge is up to 14p per minute from landlines or up to 55p per minute from mobiles. This is the charge levied by the caller's phone provider for connecting and conveying the call. It's the same rate for all 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers.

Ouch, I've always thought that was a one off. I stand corrected.

I made the call and checked it on my online account just now. Calling RM on their 0845 cost me 16p a minute (from a Talk Talk landline account)

You can confirm that by adding the TalkTalk Access Charge to the Royal Mail Service Charge. Both are set at a per minute rate but be aware that the Access Charge is billed per minute and the Service Charge is billed per second. There may also be some rounding of the total fee.
