Royal Mail still using 0845 numbers?

Having been stung calling up a company on an 0845 over a year ago I am always concerned about making calls to such numbers.

As far as I understood it the law has been for some years now that businesses must not use 08 numbers (unless Freefone) and businesses that are permitted to use them must clearly state the call cost next to the number.

I'm trying to call Royal Mail but they are still using 0845 numbers on their invoices. Are they still allowed to do this?

Seems they are not the only ones. Was given an 08 number by my gas supplier to call when I had a problem with my meter. Asked for an alternative and they said they didn't have one.

084 numbers currently cost up to 62p per minute including a Service Charge of up to 7p per minute, and 087 numbers currently cost up to 68p per minute including a Service Charge of up to 13p per minute. These are premium rate numbers. The premium is the additional Service Charge. Their use is banned for customer services, financial services and public services.

Most organisations have changed their number, usually to the matching 03 number. Royal Mail persists in using 0845 numbers alongside the new 0345 numbers. Wherever you see 0845 advertised dial 0345 instead.

Since 2015 they are no longer allowed to be as expensive as they once were. More details here:
    https://www.gov.uk/call-charges
That table of call charges is "maintained" by the Cabinet Office. It is incomplete and incorrect. Some of the figures are from 2014, others from 2015 and others more up to date. Some are completely wrong. It gives a false view of the current situation.

The regulations covering various businesses and organisations require them to use a cheaper number, such as 03 or 080. They don't make 084 or 087 numbers cheaper to call.

    Where did you see that?
When I look at the contact us section on their website it offers an 0345 number.

The P739s were updated quite some time ago.

Royal Mail have both 0345 and 0845 numbers.

They promote the 0345 numbers to consumers and the 0845 numbers to businesses.

Interesting. Is there any benefit to RM or the businesses?
Seems weird. I know 0345 is inclusive in my mobile calls for example but I dont think 0845 is.

On calls to premium rate numbers starting 084, 087, 09 and 118, the Service Charge element of the call cost is paid to the benefit of the called party and their telecoms provider. The caller's phone provider retains the Access Charge.

The DWP still list a 0845 number on their carers letters but when you dial it you'll be given a different (0345?) number which from memory then gives you a 0800 number. At least it did the last time I used it.

You're not charged for the 0845 number.

Have you tried actually calling the number?
