M & S sells corned beef in a round tin. I saw some last week and was astonished! Sainsbury's used to sell it in round tins years ago, but not any more unfortunately.
About tin openers not working - I think the rims on a lot of tins are deeper than they used to be. Like a previous poster, I find the "winged" type works as a rule. Not always though
Ye Olde Oak do corned beef in round tins. I think I bought mine in Home Bargains.0 -
I've had no problems; I use @ldi budget chopped toms a lot, and my ancient electric K£nwood opener copes just fine.
I actually struggle with ring-pulls - even using one of those gadgets to give more leverage, I often have to get Mr LW to open ring pull cans for me; and I also find sometimes the ring becomes detached without opening the can, leaving me to have to use the afore-mentioned K£nwood.
I'm another who's used the Kenwood electric can opener for years partly because of arthritis but also because I'm 100% left handed . I'm not sure if that is an issue re normal can openers but with 3 left handed offspring who struggled too while their right handed brother was fine it may be.
Back in the 60s there was little choice and was generally the stab the can and start opening type which never worked for me . When my Kenwood gave up the ghost a couple of years ago I found the latest version half price in my local coop - very mse.
Suki If you haven't found your perfect potato peeler . I suggest trying the oxo good grips one . It has a chunky soft grip handle and does the job well. They sell a lot of products which work well and are disability friendly . I also bought the vegetable peeler but tend to stick to the potato one as it has a larger head and does the job faster.

The only can opener that works 100% for me is the Culinare MagiCan - we had one when I was growing up and as an adult never found one that doesn't break or do a rubbish job - finally remembered this one and got it off Am4z0n earlier this year and hey presto - works as well as it always did, I honestly can't recommend it enough - so easy and comfy to use as well!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old Style, Crafting and Techie Stuff boards. If you need any help on these boards, do let me know. Yes, many tin openers are either 'left' or 'right' handed and you;ll struggle to use them if you're the opposite.
Although the design we have works equally for both (can't remember the brand, but it;s simiar to the culinaire one linked to above)0 -
A somewhat resurrected thread but it's good to know it's not just me getting older and even more cack-handed.
On the potato peeler front I have a nice SS one from Ikea. It's not articulated as I prefer to move my wrist.0 -
In the mid 70s (I think) I bought a tin opener from the Ideal Home Show that unsealed the top from the bottom of the tin so there were no sharp edges. I have never found a replacement for it unfortunately. Best tin opener ever, such a shame as I would buy another in the blink of an eye.All that clutter used to be money0

Yes I've been having this problem, even splashed out for an Oxo can opener from Lakeland but it broke quite quickly, I've bought a cheaper one now but still keep having issues. I have gone to using a camping/army stab the can style one as they all just seem hopeless. I've never had this issue before
It's similar with the potato peeler, I never gave it a second thought before, finally replaced one thinking that after 15 years the blade would be a bit dull and a new one would make lighter work, the replacements all seem rubbish and harder to use!0 -
Actually I have the peeler sussed now
Its the Ibili TOMATO peeler
Its what I use in work, where I can peel 50kgs of carrots an hour. We like the groves it gives the carrots as they aren't so slippery to handle whilst dicing and slicing0 -
I find the potato peelers with the two opposing blades are the only ones worth buying. They never get blunt and keep on going for decades.0

The best can opener I've had was the original WL MagiCan which sits flat on top of the can and cuts the whole top of the lid off.

My old one had given up the ghost and I tried many others, which were all rubbish; I then found someone selling new WL ones at a car boot sale and now I have a working one again!0
