Why don’t can openers work anymore?

Sometimes mine work, sometimes they don't and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.
If all else fails, I have one of the old-fashioned "stab the can" types.
Not keen on the ring pull type of tin (dangerous imo) and don't get me started on tins of corned beef! Why can't it come in a round tin?
Because they are imported, and straight edges mean more stowage than round edges.Logistics.Its why we have flat pack furniture.0 -
Himself has a range of stab & hack tools intended for opening tins.
I utterly prefer the Bonzer which can handle all sorts of sizes & is merciless & being intended for commercial use is robust as all heck. The link goes to an expensive one, but it is a Buy Once thing. Until you lack the strength to lift and wind, you will use this from your student days through to your old age & you can repair & restore them (if you find a neglected one).0 -
The best can opener I've had was the original WL MagiCan which sits flat on top of the can and cuts the whole top of the lid off.

My old one had given up the ghost and I tried many others, which were all rubbish; I then found someone selling new WL ones at a car boot sale and now I have a working one again!
Another vote for Magican tin opener. Ours must be over a decade old and going strong
As for peelers.

Had the same problem. Why I asked. So I examined the tin and the tool. Appears some tin manufacturers have changed the parameters of the rim. Its very small but enough to stop it working. The cogs of the opening tool no longer fit in fully preventing a safe opening. Some makes are OK. But others are non standard. This is dangerous and could cause an accident. Wife gone round the bend with it after spending out on new tools.0
